Default Few questions...(freshen up engine)

Hey Guys,

Ok,

I have a 00 LS1 engine. It has 103K miles on it. Well I figured before I drop it into a car I might as well freshen it up some. So then I don't have any worries when I start building it.

So what would be some good ideas?

I was thinkg, a oil pump, rod bolts, mains and rod bearings, and maybe some rings?

Also..how about those lingenfelter high volume pumps on ebay? Worth it?

With that listed above what am I looking @? $500 also will that bring it up a little in relibiltiy if I start to say, spray it and do h/c,etc???

Or should I just go a lil more and get a set of pistons so I can hold more power?

I am pretty knowlegable about engines, just wanting a little advice.

Joe

I would just do the oil pump and lifters. You need to hone the cylinders if you want to get new rings to break in properly.

Hmm...do i need to pull the crank and all for a hone? @ work when we do an inframe on a diesel we hone the cylinders and such, just pull the rods, and pistons..(i know its a totally diffrent scenerio)

I am just wanting the most life from the engine since I plan on doing heads/cam in the future.

Or just do as you say,and drive it til it blows and in the mean time save for a nice short block? (I do wanna go 6.0 iron eventually)

i got this oil pump: http://www.sdparts.com/product/12586665/LS6OilPump.aspx
you should also do the ls7 lifters and an ls2 timing chain.

Rings, bearings (rod and main), re hone, rod bolts/timing chain/oil pump if you want to, gaskets & seals if yours don't look too good. Maybe injectors. Then just check the rest (lifters, PR, springs valves, valve seals)

If your going to pull the pistons, do it right. THese motors have piston slap problems because they were built with a hight piston to cylinder clearance. By honing the cylinders and reinstalling the stock pistons you will only be making that problem worse. The LS1 sleves can be bored about .010 over. if you really want to tear it down to rebuild it I would bore it over, replace the rod bolts, and do all necessary machine work. It WILL cost much more the $500 though. I'd guess closer to $1500 with a valve job, maching/polishing the crank, other machine work and parts.

Or you could just stab a cam and a better oil pump in it and start saving for that 6.0 (that's what I would probably do).

You might as well do rod bolts while you're in there. They are only $90 and real insurance against one of the weak parts of these engines.

Sounds good to me.

I was thinking, Oil Pump,Lifters, do a compression check.

I mean it has 100K miles, but its been taken care of. So it wouldn't hurt to add a nice cam (say 23x/23x) some pushrods and springs and run it hard would it?

Then maybe some heads,or just save save for a lq4 do some L92's nice cam and L76 intake? Or not even waste time w/ that and start saving for the FI down the road?

In the looong run I'd love to build a FI car using a low compression built short block
