Default Oil starvation?

Just curious, has anybody ran into oil starvation issues or heard of them with LS1's?

ask anyone who has spun a bearing what caused it. typical chevrolet wet sump - feeds the motor excellent - returns to the pan poorly. chevrolet has been notorious about this for like 50 years or something..haha.

This is one reason that I didn't buy the Melling pump, I was concerned with this happening. The LS1 puts a lot of oil up top at high RPM.

Yes

Seen several cracked blocks do to oil starvation. Mostly back in #7 & #8 do to oil starvation during a high speed sweeping corner on a road course. and valves dropping in the 7 & 8s

Running a quart over helps most of the time. Accu-sump helps all the time. also helps with pre-lubing the block before start up.

I've been seriously thinking of adding an Accu-sump to my set up. So you only think a 1 qt is sufficient? Not a 2 or 3 qt?

Depends on what do you with your car. For autox and most road courses 1qt should be enough. Try to stay away from after-market pans, though, just use the stock pan. Where would you mount it accusump? In race cars a lot of people install them in the cockpit.

I've heard of people putting them in the fender area or the front bumper support area. Don't like the idea of a medium fender bender busting something off and losing my oil .

LS1's have been known for oil starvation problems using the OEM-supplied oil pump. Oil is supplied to the cam and main bearings together; i.e., not a priority main feed oil system. Porting the OEM pump helps. Buying a hi-flow aftermarket pump helps even more. Removing the plastic lifter retainer trays, and drilling two, 1/2" holes (1 per lifter) in them will help oil get back down to the pan faster.

I heard about it. Some good things some bad. the bad was letin oil dirp out to fast and causing lifter damage. The good was for the really high rpm guys and big oil pumps and psi.

I HEARD/FELT it happen (cool noises and strong lurch as the engine tried to lock up)!

With the "stock style" wet sump (ported high flow pump, baffled pan), I managed to spin #7 and #8 on my 388. At high RPM, the oil puddles in the top of the engine and can't get back down to the pan fast enough, resulting in the oil pump sucking air.

It's the reason I'm converting to a 5 stage dry sump system

one thing the track guys do (myself included) is run an extra quart of oil. it increases blowby slightly, but seems to help with the starvation (not prevent, help).

im running a thunder ported ls6 pump, and an extra quart. i only run redline (a true synthetic, not like mobil1. i love starting this fight haha).

so far so good. going on about a year now with 500+ track miles ( 5000+ rpm the entire time) and its still going strong. *knock on wood*

There is this one other option you guys should consider. It's a custom baffle made by Improved Racing. http://www.improvedracing.com/produc...3a4784f04e942c

It will probably save your cars from oil starvation during hard driving while running the stock FBody pan. I just picked one up for my LSX RX7 build since I need to use the FBody pan.

Kamin,

Awesome S14 by the way. I use to have an auto Kouki S14 that was pearl white. If it was 5 speed I would have kept it. Wish I did now that I've discovered these LS swaps
