Default Worth it to upgrade?

Still gathering parts for my budget '05 LQ4 build. Cam thats going in is rather small, 216/226 .527/536 112+4. Next winter, Im gonna stab in a larger cam but for now, its not in the budget.

I know the factory LQ4 is 9.4-1 compression with the large chamber 317s and a 0.054" gasket. I never new Patriot sold new stock assembled 243 heads so cheap.

My plan is to run a .040" head gasket if I were to swap heads. Would the solid point in compression be worth it? I know the heads flow very similar (243 vs 317) but would there be a large benefit from the increased compression?

I'd mill the heads but I do not want to run into PTV clearance issues when I step up cam size.

And yes, the cam is small but it was a great price and will do for now.

Thanks guys
Nick

Mainly the money. That'll end up costing me another $600 ontop of the cost of new stock 243s.

Mayby someday...

i would leave the heads alone. i assume you're using an ls1/6 intake? if you haven't bought an intake yet, i'd look at the vic jr/super vic setups. an L92 head is a possibility, as well...using the L92 carbed intake, as it is the only single plane i know of avail for L92. the lq4 pistons have a -6.5cc dish, which should allow for quite a bit of ptv on most any setup assuming you're not trying to use a 53cc head or something.

im having my heads milled right now for an entire point also it will be around a 20hp gain but will make my cam more lively down low. compression helps out with more duration, which is what it sounds like ur going to. id do it, wait i already did lol. id tell u the dyno dif but dont have them on yet
