If it's only the first couple threads and you are CONFIDENT in using a tap, I wouldn't think it a bad thing to just do it yourself. Just be CAREFUL and work it in very slowly and back out. Take your time.

Maybe some other people who have done the same thing could recommend something else though. In the end, it might be wiser to take it somewhere.

Also, how did you do this? Were you attempting to thread the plugs right away with the ratchet? Be sure to thread them as far as you can by hand, until you can't possibly go any further. THEN, use a tool for the extra force. If you do it by hand, the chances of actually crossthreading it are very very slim.

If you are going to use a tap, be extremely careful to start it straight, or you could potentially cause a larger problem. Coating the tap with some grease will help to retain any shavings on the tap also. Before you attempt to install the spark plug, inspect the threads on it to make sure it isn't the cause of your problem. I've run across plugs where the ground strap sticks out too far where it's attached to the plug, causing the plug to start crooked.

Grease and a vaccum will go a long way for doing quick repairs.
