Symptoms of too much lifter preload?

Symptoms of too much lifter preload? Just want to know if anyone knows what the symptoms would be if my engine has to much lifter preload? Would it cause decrease gas mileage, less power in the higher rpm's?

I had 7.4 hardened pushrods but noticed the stock rockers were only wearing on the outter tip. So I changed the pushrods to 7.425 and now the rockers show wear right in the middle of the tip, which I think is where it's suppose to be. What I don't really like is when I torque down the rockers to 22 ftlbs it temporarily opens the valve even though it's on the base of the cam but eventually closes.
One problem I encountered was I had so much preload that it collapsed the lifter and caused the valve to stay open a small ammount which caused a mis-fire. I didn't drive the car needless to say, untill after I readjusted the valves.
