Lifter question OK doing cam install....I made my own tool to keep the lifters up, but it will not go all the way into the holes. I spin the cam and its not hitting any lifters, but the tool will still not go in. Now....hypothetically of course, lets say I spin the cam, knock the lifters up and take the cam out. If a lifter falls does the "lifter cup" catch it or does it fall and get all out of whack? If a lifter falls with the cam out, can I stick a magent in the pushrod hole and pull the lifter up as I reinstall the cam or does it not work that way. I have one (1) pen magent....just trying not to buy 15 more. |

http://i166.photobucket.com/albums/u...26/copy541.jpg Thats how the lifters sit in the motor. the plastic holds the top part of the lifter, where the push rod goes in. By spinning the cam, you push the lifters back into the cup and it is supposed to hold it. Honest i wouldn't trust it to hold it. I'm not sure bout the tooling use to hold up the lifters, because i was changing my heads when i did the cam. here are some pics of my motor. If the lifter drops, I THINK it is going land on the crank or fall down into the oil pan. Hope this helps http://i166.photobucket.com/albums/u...26/copy542.jpg http://i166.photobucket.com/albums/u...6/DSCN0880.jpg |
I am just wondering if the plastic will keep the lifters from falling all the way through. decisions decisions |
dude all you do is spin the cam until you cant hear the lifter on the cam anymore then thats when there inside the lifter holders and they wont come out but just make sure there in there before you take it out cause if not they will fall down into the oil pan then you will have a problem |
They are knocked up into the cups, but that what exactly I am trying to avoid is one falling into the lower end. I guess what I am trying to ascertain is if the lifter cups just keep the lifters aligned or if they actually hold the lifter from falling too far. |
They should hold them up. When i unbolted the cups and took the lifters out , it held them until i went to lay them on the ground. Before you pull the old cam out, make sure the new one is ready to go so the time without a cam being in the car is minimal |
Ya.....Its decision time. I am gonna try my tool one more time, but if that doesnt work, russian roulette time it is. |
