like a really really loud booming sound, like maybe I forgot to put my header on, with a hint of rattling.

i've done it before too terry. i don't think your pistons will have anything but little knicks on them. they should be fine. your intake valves will pry all be slightly bent and need replacing. no reason to give up on your engine. intake valves don't cost but 15 a piece and you will need 8. good luck.

OK I just went home for lunch, and picked up an air hose attachment on the way. I can hear air whizzing by the intake valve, so looks live a ptov issue (sigh). No time for the car right now but I'll figure out what I want to do next weekend.

That is what I thought crappy deal man...

I'd just pull the heads try and clean up the piston tops and get the valves replaced. I'd throw in a smaller cam as well and measure it up.

.035 is a lot of milling on 5.3L heads.

try for 80 thou clearance on the intake side. You might have whacked the exhaust valves too but I think it is probably just the intakes.
Good luck,
Chris

My experience is PTV goes to hell with aftermarket valves, your combo with stock 2.00/1.55 valves may have survived but not with 2.02"/1.60" valves , that cam and milling. I would pull heads and cut valve reliefs in stock pistons. Isky tool, has worked grandly with Slowhawks setup. Just my 2 cents.

I have .040 off my 5.3L heads and a 232 cam. I measured PV clearance to be ~.015 before flycutting

Sounds like you made 8 nice valvereliefs

Never know what you'll get into with the P to V stuff...turned out my 5.3's had been decked before TEA shaved another .015 off. To make a long story short, my car ended up with .075 P to V with a 224 cam!

Best Wishes on getting it fixed soon.

Damn Terry, that sucks. Maybe you shoulda read an install book before attempting stuff over your head like that.

Question:

When I did my H/C swap, instead of measuring with clay, I turned the motor over several times after valvetrain install, by hand using a breakerbar. If I had PV clearance issues wouldn't they be identified using this method?

If I ever do another H/C swap, I will clay it but I thought this was a viable substitute at the time. I realize there would be no way to measure the clearance this way but at least i would know if the valves are hitting the pistons, right?

I think the reason you have to have a certain minimum clearance is because at high rpms your rods stretch slightly because of the momentum of the pistons, resulting in less piston to valve clearance. So even if they didn't touch turning it over by hand, they could hit at high rpms.

This is true, also valves expand when heated as does pistons, this can change static clearance from actual dynamic hot clearances.Cam installed centerline will sway clearances from one motor to the next even with similar specs.

so whatd you find out did you take pictures

i have 0.050 off my stock 5.7 heads, 224 cam, and 7.35 rods. i clayed 7.4 rods, but it just cut through...def would have had a problem. i cant imagine running your setup without testing pv clearance! the 7.30 rods might work, or maybe 7.25...hard to say, thats a big cam.
