Im sorry if the piston slap topic has been drilled and repeated but I think you guys should here this.
I bought my ls1 back on November 11th. Prior to that I had read up on ls1's and all of the possible issues the cars had. Burning oil, crappy 10 bolts, piston slap, 98-99 with bad oil pumps.
When I test drove my car I noticed when I started up it had some sort of knock, which later I believe was piston slap of some sort. The noise stopped after about 3 minutes of operation. So I knew pisston slap was there when I bought it.
Shortly after I had got home, went out to do some pulls with my buddy's Ram Air 96 LT1. I quicklyy made short work of him and puleld him pretty good, stock vs stock. I was cruising home, and the bottom end started makin some noise. The noise got more and more noticeable, until it was like a Holy Crap noise. Took the car home and parked it, and called the dealer.
The car was diagnosed with 2 rod bearings spun. The dealer fixed the car for free and went through the whole motor. Installed a new oil pump just in case that was the culprit of the spun bearings. 2 new rods, and machined the crank.
I just got the back yesterday, and I live in alaska, and it gets cold here sometimes hahaha Walked out to the car this morning in balmy single digit temps "non garaged". Started the Z-28 up and it was as quiet as a kitten, no knock, slaps, pings whatsoever. I was very impressed. I have driven the car about 70 miles now with the rebuild and have had no issues.
Maybe the bearing that were bad caused the original noise? Maybe it caused the slap noise? Maybe it was oil pump failure. Maybe the slap was caused from bad quality control at GM like others have mentioned?
Just an observation I have made before and after, just wanted to tell my story.
