Default What to do, what to do...?

Just picked up an LS1 from a 1997 Corvette, came complete with wiring harness, all the hoses and cables (freakin thing had the battery cables on it), computer, coil packs, everything. This is going into a 1990 240SX.

It also came with some problems. Theres a slight knock sound and metal shavings in the oil filter. From what I read on this board its probably a rod bearing.

That all being said, I'm pretty much a total n00b when it comes to the internals of motors, so I need advice on what to do. Here are the options that I can see:

1) Precision Engine in Houston will give me a rebuilt long block for $1995 if I trade in my core. It will just be built to stock specs but that's pretty cheap for a fresh motor, and I don't need crazy amounts of power when I'm running it in a gutted 240 that weighs 2500lbs.

1a) Those same people said they would do the build with certain parts of my choosing like pistons, rods, cam, etc. if I supply them with the parts.

2) I've seen vendors on this board sell short blocks for ~2700 sometimes, and I believe they came with forged pistons and I'm sure most of the other components were better. If I go that route I won't have the money to do anything to my stock heads so I'll just have to bolt them on as-is.

3) Buy my own parts, take the block to a shop to inspect and do whatever it is they need to do to it. Then pay either a shop or awesome board member to re-assemble for me. I don't know what I'm doing yet so doing it myself is probably a bad idea.

What are your thoughts?

It matters on your budget. If you can build up the block some since it needs rebuilding anyway I would go for it. You could go for a 383 kit using your block. I would check with some of LS1tech's dealers like Texas Speed, Speed Inc., etc. Check the listing to the right. There are many things you could do. If you are planning to keep the motor stock with no mods/N20, etc just go with a stock block. I would build up the lower end if you plan on any major mods.

Good luck.

Well I know this will be a difficult question to answer but I'd like to run mid 11's.

The car is a 1990 240SX gutted with a weight of approx. 2500lbs. I'll be running a VLSD with 4.08 gearing.

I know it's impossible to tell exactly what I need to do that but what hp/torque RANGE should I be looking for to achieve that? I'm guessing around 400hp/400tq but thats a complete guess. Maybe someone here can chime in and tell me what sort of setup I would need to achieve that goal, then I can price out my options accordingly.

Thanks!

you can make LOTS of power with stock heads. buy some STOCK LS6 heads, and throw them on. my numbers in sig were made through stock ls6 heads

your going to want at least a 23x/23x cam, LS6 intake, Long tubes, etc.. etc..

400/400 will put you easily in the 10's at that weight if you can hook. That is a weight/hp ratio of 6.25lbs/1hp. This car will haul some a$$ Some of the full weight cars are doing high 11's with 400/400. A 400hp 3500lb car will be at 8.75lbs/1hp.

So I talked to Precision Engine and their builder was saying that if I did a core exchange he would use a 6.0 iron block instead of my 5.7 aluminum and wouldn't charge me. That being said, I'm not sure the plan will work. Can I use the stock EFI setup from my 5.7 LS1 if he switches blocks on me? He also ASSURED me that he could reuse my 5.7 heads if he modified them on the 6.0 block, but I'm skeptical. Basically I'm wondering if I should tell him to stick with the 5.7 aluminum or if he has a good idea here. I bought the LS1 with the accessories it had on it because they work optimally for the 240SX swap. I don't want to have to buy all new parts, that would be a total waste.
