Default Do I need a timing chain?

Do I need a timing chain and if I do, which one?

I am planning on doing my cam install in the next couple of weeks and the only thing I have left is to decide on the timing chain. Here is what I am going to install:

Comp Cam 224/224 .581/.581 112LSA +4
Comp Cam Revised 918's
Comp Cam Chromoly 7.4 pushrods
Melling Hi-Volume Oil Pump

I was thinking about upgrading to a LS2 chain, but wasn't sure if I needed the entire set, just the chain, or an adjustable set. Any advice is appreciated.

I put the LS2 timing chain when I did my cam swap you might as well since everything is apart you don,t want to put that much stress on the stocker with a new cam.

SDPC now also has a drop in IWIS chain for about $42.

For the price, its a nice upgrade just to be on the safe side.

So everyone agrees that I just need the chain and not the entire set. Looks like I will be ordering a chain today then.

Correct. On a more advanced setup, a stroker, or blueprinted motor, then youll want an adjustable kit. But on a cam only swap, just replace the timing chain and go have fun.

Truth, you just need the chain. We have the LS2 chain for 37.52, or an IWIS chain for $42. Either will be adequate for your needs and works with the stock gears

However, when only replacing the chain it is always prudent to fully inspect the sprockets for problems.

The stocker will have some slack in it. But its fine, if it has 60+k maybe consider changing it. its just a PITA due to the oil pick up tube and if you mess the seal up, your tearing it back down again.....

Yeah, I only plan on going to 6200-6300, but I figured it is better to be safe than sorry. I don't want to tear everything apart and do the install just to have the chain break a week later. I live by the saying measure twice, cut once, LOL.
