Any reason to avoid '04 GTO LS1?

I might have a good deal on a 38K mile LS1 out of a GTO. The only 'problem' I am facing is the fact that I have to buy the motor/tranny and it's a T-56 setup. I am going to run an auto in my '56 Belair project.

I'm hoping I can buy the assembly and sell the T-56 and all related stuff then just buy a built Auto setup.

I'm assuming I can't use the 6sp harness and ECM though, either.

Any reason to avoid the '04 model year LS motors?

I don't know a whole lot about late model GTOs but from one old school car guy to another I would keep the 6 speed. I had a turbo 400 in my 71 Z28, which was great for racing but when it comes to cruising and rowing through the gears and gas mileage, I love the T56 in my 98SS and I will be putting one in my next 2nd gen build.

04 LS1 is a good motor. Has the good rod bolts, an LS6 intake, & I think a good oil pump too.
How good of a deal are we talking about here? It would be cheaper to find a 2000-2004 LS1 with auto so you can use the computer & poss build the 4L60E up or sell it.

To run an auto tranny you would simply have to have the PC flashed for it

Just get an '05 with the 50 extra HP, better hood, and dual exhaust, etc.

It has 38K on it and the car was hit in the passenger front so the motor wasn't touched as far as I could tell.

I'm going to lowball the dude tomorrow and see what I can get it all for.

EDIT: I was going to put ARP rod bolts, cam, heads, etc anyway but that is good to know.
