Default Finishing up: Engine Intake

My T/A has some decent work done to it already, including heads, cam, headers, flywheel, clutch, hf oil pump, elec water pump. One thing I did not replace was my stock LS6 intake manifold. I did get a ported and polished stock TB, but that's it.

Now I'm thinking about finishing my car up so I get as much as I can out of my engine and the mods I've already put into it. My LS1 is stock displacement, and I'm thinking about getting the following:

Fast LSX Intake 90mm
Edelbrock or Nick Williams 90mm TB
SLP 85mm MAF
90mm intake lid

I already have a new 90mm rubber joint for connecting the lid to the TB.

With the mods my car has now, it dynoed around 370 RWHP and 360 RWTQ. I'm hoping that those intake replacements will get me right around 400.

I heard that the larger than stock MAFs cause tuning issues. Is there any MAF that is larger than stock that would provide a stable basis for tuning? Any other advice or suggestions for me?

Not to be an ***....but your car is dynoing REALLY low for all those mods...what type of dyno was it on? is it tuned?

The dyno is about right. I have cats on it, and I have a 12-bolt rear with 4.11 gears. The cam is a futral F13. Anyway, what about the intake stuff?

What heads are you running?

With heads and a F13 cam, you should be in the 400's rwhp.

If you are going to stay in the lower 400's, keep the LS6 intake manifold, if you want more, you will need the FAST 90/90.

I would probably be right around 400 RWHP if I removed my cats. I was pushing 370 RWHP before with stock heads and a TR224 cam, no cats and stock rear end. The 12-bolt rear has more parasitic loss than the stock 10-bolt, and I'm sure that running cats is costing me around 20-30 RWHP...at the very least, it requires that the tune be a bit less agressive. I'm probably not going to remove them tho, since they help with the exhaust smell.

I would like to get the most I can out of the engine without stroking it or doing anything drastic...so would an intake and TB net me the extra 30 RWHP or so without having to remove cats?

Are they high-flow cats? If so, I doubt you are losing 30 hp with them.

Wait wait...you dynoed 370 with a TR224 and stock heads, and now you have heads (you still didn't say which ones) and a F13 and you are still dynoing 370 and you are attributing it to the addition of cats? I don't think so.

Dont blow your money on garbage 85mm maf. I put down 462 with a ms3 5.3l heads, and 90/90 with a stock maf.

No way! 5 rwhp lost at the most, by using cats.

Read the previous posts where I already explained that. Cats + 12-bolt. I also did not have it tuned at the same place so there could be variations between the dynos. The most recent place I had it tuned was Cartek, and I'm pretty sure they got the most out of it that was possible. The only way to get a true before and after comparison is to use the same dyno under the same environmental conditions.

I'd love anything over 450...I have TSP 5.3L ported heads. I don't get why we need to get a 90mm TB and Intake manifold if the maf remains at its stock diameter...wouldn't you make more than 462 if you had a bigger maf?

If the gain from running cats is so small, i.e. 5 RWHP, then it hardly seems logical to remove them completely and have a car that smells like a 70s beater. I think the cats' effect on performance scales up more depending on how much you mod your engine...in my case, I'd say I'm giving up at least 15 RWHP to the cats.

I am just concerned because I have seen similar set-up to yours pushing well in the 400's (even with high-flow cats).

And yes the loss of hp with high-flow cats is very minimal and I too don't see the reason why people don't keep their cars equipped with them...they reduce rasp and exhaust smell. I think people like to ditch them to get a few more decibels out of their car.

My thoughts exactly! I'm an advocate for KEEPING cats. I ALWAYS get beat up on here when I make statements such as above, and oh yeah, Its also a Federal Offense to remove your cats.

I would be depressed if a setup like that only made 370rwhp on my personal vehicle. Something is off somewhere because this setup or close too has repeatedly produced numbers over 400rwhp with the same drive train as yours. If you are happy with the car and really think you are down 30+rwhp because of cats over similar setups than so be it.

When I got all the parts I was also expecting to be close to or over 400 RWHP and was disappointed when I found out I was only hitting 370. I am well aware of the fact that many other people seem to be putting down better numbers with a setup like mine.

So what can I pick up that extra 30 RWHP I'm missing. Is there something I am overlooking in my setup? My engine tune is off? If the cats are only sapping me for 5 RWHP I should have around 395 RWHP with my current setup.

I'd say get your car retuned or get it on a scanner to see what's up.
