Default Oil Pump Failure Questions....

Ive got a stock 98 oil pump laying around... what causes the pumps to fail????

Doesnt look like there is much in there at all... is it the spring and plunger that go out?

Well the thing that causes LSx pumps to fail is either improper instalation, or some kind of small debris getting in the presure relief valve, jaming it in the full open position. The 2001-2002 LS1s use the LS6 pump which is a little better than your 98 pump. Or you can get an improved pump from Thunder Racing that is basically a modifed LS6 pump. I believe they port it a little, put a stiffer spring on the presure relief valve so it will put out more oil presure, and increase the piston to wall clearance on the presure release valve so it is less likely to get stuck by some dirt. It's also pretty easy to install them wrong, so make sure you understand the install before you swap it out.
