Cams just go together with a higher stall with these cars. If you're not willing to swap out the stall now with a cam....then your money is spent better somewhere else. Yes...you'll see some type of gain with a cam on the stock stall....but it wouldn't be running to it's full potential without the stall. If you want to keep the stock stall, and money is an issue, then get something else....like a good catback or a cutout.

If you have your heart set on a cam, call Thunder Racing and see what they reccomend. I know plenty of people who have run a stock stall & small cam (TR224)with good results.

As for the stall, I know you are against it, but a small stall (~2800)converter will give an increas without affecting drivability.

For what it's worth, Comp Cams said the XR275 would work reasonably well with a stock setup, but would really work best with more intake, stall, and gear. Can you say $$$$$$ ? They recommended the XR265.

And it's not so much that I'm "against" more stall, it's a matter of $funds$, practicallity, and especially suitability (what works best with what). I'm old enough to remember the muscle car era of the 60's. I remember one of my best friends and I putting a 750 Holley DP on a stock 283 small blk. that was in his '55 Chevy (stock other than headers). We then test drove it and couldn't figure out why it bogged at stop lights and otherwise ran like skunk. Same goes for cams, converters, and everything else. Larger isn't always better, it must all work together.

Another issue is the rpm operating range of these cams. First of all, without tuning to compensate, the stock ECM will cut off at 6200. Being my son's Hawk is a DD'er, and an A4, I can't see him ever wanting or needing to go over that anyway. Therefore, the cams most posters are recommending would be a waste of usable lower rpm range and low-end torque. Why would we want to sacrifice those for higher-end capabilities that we will never need, nor could ever use?

Thx for the replies...everyone. We will either be staying with the stock stick or going with the XR265.

keep your stock catback and get an electric cutout.. wayy better. as for cams.. a 224 , 56X-58X ish liftcam on a 114 would suit you well for a stock stall

Just my opinion. Take a look at the Thunder Racing TR220/220-114. Would be a great cam and will run ok with stock stall. The 214/220 is a good one too. With long tubes and a good Y, I think a good muffler is a must. I think I would forego the lid for a while to pick up a good unrestrictive muffler. Sounds strange but your exhaust is the opportunity to pick up some decent torque. I have to believe that the exhaust is more restrictive than the stock intake but I really can't be sure. That should keep you in the same price range.

I ran my TR224 on my stock stall for a while and since my tune was good it was not bad at all so the TR220/220 would be great.

Second idea is hold off on cam and do the lid/bellows and full exhaust then have your boy work towards the cam and tune when possible. Your question leaves me in a quandry due to the lack of a supporting mod in either direction. I think you will end up with a good setup however you go but even a stall ~2400 rpm would be huge.

Damn, I'm ramblin'. Good luck!!
