I did mine myself and I didn't think it was too bad. I'd rate the difficulty of it a 6.
Just take your time and have some patience and you'll be okay.
I do agree with the others, getting the pulley back on was the hardest part.

Not if you have the proper tool for the job

The install tool that was made by a sponsor on here that I rent out is perfect for the job. You can see it in the tool section, you can purchase it as well from him. I have combined all the specialty tools for everyone in a nice rental package. Having the right tool for any job makes it 100% easier.

i'm with these guys, it's probably a 6 or 7 on the hardnes scale, it was my 2nd LS1 mod i did on my own, the first being the LS6 intake. read the instructions and make sure u have everything you need when you start. and put in a new timing chain while you are in there.

there are many write ups about this, I did my own. Im like everyone else and take pride in doing mods on my own, but in this case 350 seems like a good deal... as long as he knows what he is doing. Id say have him do it but give him a hand so you know for next time.

I know you've already got your cam package but for anyone else reading this I offer the rental for a discount price if you get your cam package from me. I offer custom ground Comp Cams, Comp magnum pushrods and PAC racing springs in a complete package.

do it yourself. The cam swap itself= 3 Underdrive pulley=4 New oil pump=7 That thing was a pain in the ***! Damn that pick up tube bolt. Double springs=3 just takes time. I did everything in a weekend and was hung over sat. morning so you should be o.k
As long as it looks like this

It's all good in the hood!

it's not that hard it's more time consuming. I would usually say do it yourself but if have someone reputable to do it for $350 i would dop that.

Good luck man, you'll do fine. Just follow the write-up and if you are confused about anything just get on here and ask questions. Also, when changing the valve springs I recommend using the TDC method.

Just noticed you're from Vegas, I lived there for 5 years.

Vengeance said they would do it for $450.
The oil and timing chain swap would be an extra 1.5 hours of labor tho.

So I am kind of in the same situation.

I just hear things like lifter pre load and shimming springs that steer me away from doing it.

Do it yourself for the bragging rights!

1. Make sure cam is dot to dot and the dots make a "perfectly vertical" line
2. To get the old cam out and new one in, you'll have to have someone shove the AC condenser WAY, WAY up to avoid interference.

Are you going to do it with the heads on. If so make sure you get the lifter tool that holds them up. I tried to fab up some metal rods that seemed to work well until one spun somehow and a lifter dropped to the pan. Then I had to fish it out of the pan. Other than that it is pretty straight forward install.

Ouch, the real lifter rods are bevelled and shaped like a D.

Make SURE to get some extra valve locks. And if you get the valve spring tool from Thunder racing be sure you have someone to help you. Its IMPOSSIBLE to do it by yourself with that tool. One person has to put the locks on while you torque the **** down with everything you have got. Next time around Ill be getting the crane tool. Get a pen magnet and hold it on the oil pump pickup tube bolt until it gets started. Or you may have a problem like i did....I had to go fishing for a while. Kinda scary...:-/

^^^^^ Use a clean rag and cover the oil pan, you dont want anything falling in there anyway. Then take the bolt out and out it back in. A telescoping magnet is a good tool to have, a god one though, not some cheap POS that the head is going to fall off of.

So I'm in the middle of the swap. Pretty basic so far. I'm swapping the valvesprings now. I must say that overall, it's just time consuming.

On another note, I noticed that the cam was harder to take out than putting it back in. Is this common?

I should have her all wrapped up by Friday since I'm only operating for a few hours a day.

Maybe. Mine took a little finesse to get it out and the new one slid in without catching on a thing. Just gotta be careful.

I remember a couple of my friends doing a H/C swap on my other friend's camaro (LS1). I was there watching with my thumb up my *** haha. But, it didn't really seem that difficult. Whenever I get a T/A, I'm definitely going to his house and getting it done there. Just takes time, a lot of it.
