If your taking the tranny out anyway for a clutch it's not bad. The hardest parts removing and installing the tranny. You should be able to use the Screwdriver. The old seal gets pryed out and tap the new seal back in place with a small to medium size hammer. The pilot bearing is kind of a pita. Some stores sell a pilot bearing remover that slips onto the end of a small slide hammer. That's what I used when I did mine at college.

I thought the rear main seal had to be replaced with the rear cover off the block, then special alignment procedures to reinstall the rear cover. Is that not really necessary?

there is a plate that's bolted down covering it. You can change it without removing the plate but the plate gasket may be leaking to so if it is you replace that too you'll also have to get a new gasket but you may be able to use some gasket sealer instead. Sorry can't remember how the plate is bolted down.
