Question Help with cam identification (and specs)! Supposed to be an HPE-S!

**EDIT**

Appears this is NOT an HPE-S - see new questions below

Howdy Folks!

I bought this cam a L O N G time ago and to keep it short - I'm planning on installing it very soon.

I bought it advertised as an HPE-S grind which I understand is really close to a MS3 or LG GX3. It's in mint condition so if it's the correct part, I should be in good shape (I believe the seller said ~1500 miles).

The box is a Comp Cam but the sticker seems to conflict (and I think it's probably just a box he had lying around).

So on the cam itself, etched right into the end:

LS1 3724R 3731R
HR 114
+4

49440-06

FYI, I tried using the comp cam search and didn't get any hits on any of the numbers. Any help is appreciated (I might give HPE a call if nobody knows - just hated to bug them).

The 3724 and 3731 are the lobe numbers from the comp master lobe catalog.

Cool thanks, I see from the catalog those two lobes look like this:

3724R 3724 277 228 149 .346 .076 .062 .519 .554 .588
3731R 3731 291 242 163 .359 .102 .087 .539 .574 .610

The main numbers being a 228/242 duration and a .588/.610 lift (1.7 rockers)

So, umm, what heck [?]

Let's say the cam is exactly what the lobe profile indicates (someone on another board mentioned a couple of tuners would do a profiling for like $25) - I wonder how this stick will perform? I mean it's very close to an MS3:

MS3.........237/242 .603/.609

DT CAM....228/242 .588/.610

So a bit less on the intake duration and lift.

This would be used in C5Z06 with stock heads, PRC extreme springs, LT's, CAI, ASP pulley. Side note: I've been thinking it might be worth the extra money for a set of the revised PRC Stage I LS6's (the delta of just springs vs. new heads plus selling my 243's).

HPE-S cam is 238/242 .608/.612 115+5LSA I had it in my 01 Z06. Put down 465rwhp 422rwtq with ET LS6 heads and a stock LS6 intake, TB, and fuel system.

I still have my cam card for it

Quoting myself to bump and get some incite specifically into how people think this cam will/would perform! Since I think now it's clear it's not an HPE-S.

Wow, that's pretty stout for a stock LS6 intake/TB (I assumed those were at least ported/port matched?)

Well, if you can't check from whoever you got it from you could call comp and ask them, although I have heard mixed results from doing that.

I put it in the DC calculator off here and here are some results (assuming stock heads/gaskets)

8.02:1 DCR
44 IVC @.05
7* overlap at .05

I'm not sure if this helps you or not but might get others to chime in. The DCR is a little low I think, but its a pretty big cam. Thee 44* IVC point puts you in the mid 6k range I think. 7* overlap is not too bad of an idle. I think it would make good power with pretty good drivability, but I am in no way an expert, just trying to help you get some more advice.

The TB was ported intake was left alone. I did have my transmission internals micro polished when Rodney@RPM rebuilt it. I'm sure that added 10rwhp or so. It was also on a mustang dyno.

I would go with a different camshaft, it looks like its a custom turbo cam or something.

Agreed! Mike N. down in Orlando is doing a killer cam + install special anyway, where it's actually more expensive to provide your own cam!

Think I'll put this up for sale here and get Mike to get me a cam. I appreciate all the info!
