you'll need a cam
dual spring of your choice
retainers (typically included with the springs)
gaskets
hardened pushrods
i would suggest a new oil pump
ls2 timing chain, no sprockets as already mentioned

if it were me i would buy:
a set of patriot gold duals
use texas-speed's custom cam designer for a cam of my choice
tsp hardened pushrods
lingenfelter ported oil pump
gaskets from GM
ls2 timing chain from GM

Good Advice.. I did a MS4 with a 110 LSA (Yes a 110 LSA). Cam rocked solid with 3.23 gears and a 4,000 stall.

My block was a 98 with over 100k miles.. One thing They forget to mention is the 98's are known to have rod bolt stretch.. When I did my cam swap I added ARP rod bolts.

Just know what your getting into.. when you put in this cam.. You need a tune.. Tunes are not cheap.. It will run you about $400 for a dynotune.

With this new power you need to ask yourself if your clutch will handle the power. If the motor is high high miles and will take well to being spun so high.

If I was you I would not go for the Hard lope, Big cam that needs to be spun..

Yes you can get away with it... But you will honestly enjoy a more mid range powerband cam. I had the cam in for 4 months and I spun a rod bearing. Now im $15,000 into a 408 t56 swap build.. lol

Its your ride. Do as you want.

So what size cam do you suggest? I'm not going through all the hassle of a cam swap and spend that much money for a tr224, that's not gonna happen.

You need to ask yourself a few things:
How much power do I want?
How is the car going to be used...street/drag?
How high do I plan on spinning the motor?

These things will dictate your cam choice. I would get a cam speced out for your preferences.

We'll I do have another car that i can drive so the trans am will not be my daily. And i love the sound and power of the big lopey cams. It will be taken to the track a lot eventually (waiting till i pay it off). But since it' a 98 the rod bolts do make me nervous. Could i go with an MS3 instead? I mean i don't mind a cam that makes power sooner, but i do want big power considering the fact i dont have money to supercharger or anything. More than likely i will be adding spray too.

you have to ask yourself what you want out of a cam. if you want 6800+ rpm shiftpoints, then the ms3/4 is for you. if you want a cam with more mid-range that still has some high rpm power available, you might look into a mid 230s duration on a 110-111 lsa. i've seen MANY low 230 duration cams in the last few months making ms3/4 power up top and much more mid-range. if you want the sound, get a ******* t-rex. if you're actually doing a cam swap for performance and enjoyment, get something managable that you'll enjoy. you won't enjoy an ms4 too much looking at it sit in your toasted long block in a few months.

consider gears
shift rpm

it's your car, do as you wish. i would suggest consulting predatorz or patrickg about a cam.

Anybody that picks one of the magic stick cams for stock 98 heads is looking only for a lopey idle or they're buying it because of the name.

get a 224 cam i went from torquer 3 stage 2.5 5.3 liter heads and fast 90/90 to 224 cam ls1 intake. To be honest i am happier with the power it makes down low and midrange a lot more than then tq3. 224 make good power has a nice chop to it

What kind of numbers are you making? Main reason for my wanting a MS4 was I would like to be around 400Hp

Ok maybe you guys talked me out of the MS4, probably a good thing. Was looking around, how would the TSP 233/239 112LSA be for my situation?

i know a guy making 401rwhp w/ a torquer v3. sounds good and makes good mid range power. i would suggest tsp's 233-239. that imo would be an awsome cam for m6's and still what your looking for. its bigger than the torquer's but smaller that the ms3/4. i ordered an ms4, but im an a4 and ordered a 4000 stall to always be in the power band. check out that cam, i think you would really be happy w/ it! i know your on a budget, but remember, dont go cheap on anything, expecially the internals.

dude you need to do some searching. it's proven time and time again that 224 cams put down ~390whp consistently on very simple setups. with the new lobes, there are MANY ways to reach 400whp, the ms4 would be my last option for this goal.

23x/23x cam, PRC stage 2.5 5.3's, fast 90/90, & LT's will net ~450 rwhp.

Yeah, fully CNC'd 5.3 heads will flow good numbers and increase the CR due to smaller combustion chambers. Plus they are very affordable.

Why don't I see CNC'd 5.3 heads cheaper than 243's?

Either CNC'd 243's or CNC'd 5.3's are good heads to use in a build.
