Smile Oil Pump Swap Advice

Hey guys, havent posted in this forum in a while or kept up with whats been going on lately.

Lately I've been noticing my oil pressure gauge lower than normal and I have about 92k miles on her.

I figure its a good time to get a new oil pump and replace the timing chain as well.

My question is.....Where and what parts do you recommend for the swap?

Any tips or tricks? I did my cam install and I feel comfortable doing the swap myself.

Just need advice on parts needed. I will be placing an order with your help.

Thanks~!

I would just go with a ported pump from TSP. It's what I went with and I've got fantastic oil pressure and have ever since it was installed. Other than that I would go with the LS2 chain. Some people go with the double roller but it is really overkill in most all situations and the LS2 is just a simple swap that doesn't need anything. That's really about all that is actually NEEDED. I guess you could look into getting a new front timing cover gasket, depending on how yours looks with 90k on it but that's about it. Just remember to be very careful with that oil pump pickup tube bolt. You DO NOT want to drop that little thing, and it gets pretty slippery when soaked in oil. I would recommend stuffing some shop towels or a rag down under it so in case it does fall it wont get too far away. Either that or use a magnet to keep a hold on it as you unthread it. Good luck man.

i was told to and soon to be running a ported ls6 oil pump and a double roller timing chain...i delt with texas-speed and they took care of me. i think the oil pump is like 129.99ish and the chain is 117.99ish...if you watch the forsale section pretty hard you could probably get a better deal though

LS2 chains are around 20-25$ through a GM dealer.

How long have you owned the car and how low is the oil pressure? Just asking because the pressure will be down some here in the texas heat. Before I went through the trouble of replaceing the pump do a manuel gauge test. May save you a lot of time and money.

beedo, good point. Usually my oil gauge stays right on the 40 mark (middle), lately its been getting lower but it has been hot as hell in TX.

I do see more pressure when the car is warming up and at WOT when not heat soaked.

I'll keep on eye on it, Yesterday I drove about 140 miles from Corpus to San Anton.

When I got to SA had to drive in stop and go traffic in 98degree weather. It got hot for a minute and my oil pressure wouldnt go back up it was almost at 20 at idle and was having a hard time goin back up even when I got past 3k rpm.

Luckily I got to my hotel in time and let her cool down, this morning i noticed oil pressure just as normal..

I still want to do the swap but might take my time. I think the heat is what got me yesterday.

When we did my cam swap, we stuck a big magnet on the oil pump itself. Then when we put the bolt in it stuck.. then just threaded it in. Dont have to worry about dropping it in the oil pan. We still used shop rags just in case.

I am a fan of the Melling 10296 high volume pump. 18% more flow and a better housing than the OEM LS6 pump.

Just an Update!!!!!!

I know, I know, should of done it sooner. Fresh Filter and New Mobil 1.

Oil pressure almost hit 80 at WOT. Cruising RPM pressure right at 60. Idle a bit over 40 mark.

I guess it was a clogged filter, for now. It had been like 6 months or more yikes!!!!!

Looks like I'm stilling doing the swap, but I'm going to gather all the parts slowly.

Thanks Guys!
