Default Is BIG power possible without flycutting?

I've been looking into heads/cam setups for quite awhile and I've spent countless hours reading the forums. It seems that everyone that makes BIG power on a stock bottom end N/A LS1 has flycut their pistons because it is almost required to have high compression and a proper cam profile (valve events, big duration, etc.). If possible, I'd like to make this kind of power (480+ rwhp) without having to flycut.

So back to the thread title: Is BIG power possible without flycutting?

If it is possible, what heads/cam setup are you using?

I guess it's possible, but just like you said, the equation requires a big cam and high compression. To get high dynamic compression requires the heads to be milled, which then pushes the valves even closer to the pistons.

I'm guessing one way around flycutting would be to have the combustion chambers welded like PRC does (I think that's who does it). But I'd still measure piston to valve clearance with a big cam.

You can make that kind of power without clearancing the pistons, but it won't be cheap and it will be on the ragged edge of safe PTV valve clearance. Patriot welds the chambers to achieve better compression, but you'll never make any power with them. The only way you're going to get the compression you NEED with a big cam and piston clearance is an aftermarket head with altered valve angles, like ETP or TrickFlow.

I almost forgot about going with a head like TFS. Have it milled to a 60cc chamber to get the compression back up, then run a cam in the 228/236 range and you should be in the mid to high 400s without having to cut the pistons.

I'm running an MS4 on 111 LSA with TEA TFS 215s milled to 59cc chambers. I planned on flycutting but didn't have to. I have .095" intake and .090" exhaust PTV clearance. really surprised me, the 13* valve angles help a lot with clearance. and I should be over 480 rwhp with my setup...hope this helps you.

Very nice setup but....

TFS + aftermarket rockers = $2800

Flycut = $250

Depends what you want spend and granted the TFS are much better castings than OEM so that is also something to consider. If I was Daddy Warbucks TFS would prolly be sittin on top of my motor

you can make big power but you are limited to only a few options such as the MS4 and TFS heads people have suggested

When it comes to extracting this much power out of a 346, more than just cam and head selection comes into play. Attention to detail is very important. Having high quality supporting components will play a major role in the final outcome of the combo.

Don't get dad new socks or a grill brush this year.
