Default Rust on crank

Just got a used crank from someone on the boards today. It arrived and I opened it up to find it was rusted pretty bad. Journals look ok, a little in the oil passage ways, but a lot on the unmachined surfaces. Basically anywhere that a bearing wasn't.

Did I get a piece of junk? There is enough material for a good turning but i'm not sure about the rest? Haven't tried to wire wheel but i think it may be too much for the wire wheel.

dont wire wheel it, take it to a machine shop. they will clean it up and do the neccessary stuff to make it useable. also, as a good engine building tip, take your rods and block so they can be sized to the crank.

Thanks for the tip but that is another animal in itself. The block may not be useable and the rods are probably toast. The motor spun two bearings. So two of the rods are done and the block has some scoring in it. The problem is that it is a 97 block and I don't know if it can be bored/honed. Im already .004 away from nominal. Anyone got a good 6.0L iron block?!

well regardless what block/rods you use, they are still going to have to be sized to the crank, or it will just spin another bearing. every motor is different and wears differently depending on how it was driven.
