Hey was up quick question is it necessary to degree a cam when installing it or is just recommended. my buddy didnt do his an his running a ms3. just asking because im installing my H/C today!!

To be sure the valve events are where they were designed to be, you will need to degree the camshaft in. There are many variables that can throw those events off including the camshaft, timing set, machining of the block, and and more. Most DIY'ers just line them up dot to dot because they do not have the tools to do it the right way, and that is an investment they might not ever use again after the one cam install.

I guess it really comes down to how important the valve events are to you. We degree all of the cams in that we install here at the shop.

 

I don’t have the tool to degree the cam… so what should I do??

 

I just installed my 228/228 588/588 112 LSA dot to dot.

 

buy a degree wheel or just install it dot to dot

 

if you dont have an adjustable timing gear set, whats the point? Its not like you could make adjustments other than installing it a tooth off.

 

If you got a cam card with the cam and its correct, that lowers the percentage that something is going to be wrong. If your not racing in NHRA stock class where every HP is important, than install it dot to dot, rotate it 360 degrees and reverify its dot to dot then button her up!

Again, the issue is that every cam manufacturer around has and does make mistakes. We've seen them off by as much as 6-7º before, and while they do take care of it and replace them in such cases it would not have been known that it was off if we hadn't degreed it in!
