Default Need help Choosing H/C Package, sorry

Ok... Sorry to make another one of these, but every situation is unique I guess..... Ok, my car and mods are in the sig. I would like the most power for as cheap as possible, duhh. Or bang for the buck. I am pretty much set on TEA S2 heads, but not sure about the cam. Keep im mind I live in Cali and my car must be COMPLETELY emmisions legal. So no LT headers in the future either. Anyone have any suggestions on a H/C combo?

Thanks!!!

As far as bang for the buck, Texas Speed and Performance has a killer deal on the Patriot Performance cylinder heads, something like $1869 for heads, cam, hardened pushrods, and timing set. I think this is probably the best head and cam deal out there, IMO. I think this would put you at ~375-380 rwhp, idle smoothly, and probably could pass even Cali emissions.

Or give Absolute Speed a call, they are awesome to deal with, thats where my new heads are coming from (I had TEAs before, and wanted to upgrade both my heads and cam). AS will answer all your questions, and port a set of heads for your application, and with your goals in mind. Good luck whoever you chose, and hopefully this thread stays clean and positive.

No need to apologize, the purpose of this board is to share info, even if some of it is redundant. I agree with those responses you got. LS1 Speed Inc. matched that Head/Cam package price, and I have it ordered. Maybe Tom can cut you the same deal. My sig tells you what I'm getting for $1899.00 (head and cam)

Good luck!

Well if your looking for the BIGGEST bang for the buck, go with Patriots. I think they had some scratch and ding heads for like 1095.00 - brand new and no core. If you want a hand ported head, I'd go with Absolute Speed stage 2 - and I think now they are offering a S2 head with stock valves for like 1295.00. Also in Cali, I am not sure, but maybe you can go with a mid-length header. I would probably go with a "stealth cam" to get by inspections too - check MTI. Lots of options. Also an option would be N2O - easy 75-125 bolt in HP. That would be your BIGGEST bang for the buck.

Here in Cali, you can only go with a certified shorty header, to be specific. Currently the only one that has CARB approval is the JBA shorties. If I were looking for a shorty, I would wait for the BKK shorties, which will be the only ones with 1.75" primary runners (hooker and JBA are 1 5/8"). They are almost out, but do not have CARB approval, but are in the process of getting it for sure.

As far as h/c combo, I would put together one on your own. Like said before, Patriot or Absolute stage II heads are the best bang for the buck I have seen, and, most importantly, they are consistent and proven performers.

For cam, people here have passed sniffer with up to a TR224 on a 114 lsa, with tuning. So, considering you should get a tune with any cam to maximize gains and drivability imo, go with this or smaller to pass emissions.

For a tight budget, look for someone selling their small cam to get a bigger cam, while your heads are on order. You'll save at least 100 bucks if not more.

Lastly, valvetrain. Get a good package (pushrods, springs, retainers) from a known vendor, brand spanking new. No offense with sellers or used parts, but you do not want to risk used parts with this stuff, considering your goals.

If I were you, I would get a TR224, or B1 cam. TR224 will be the biggest gain and still be tunable to pass sniffer. The B1 (or MTI stealth cam) will be a little less power, but idle much better, run a bit smoother, and be quieter at the same time.

Hope this helps, good luck and don't forget to post your impressions when you do get one dyno tuned.

If you were wanting a TEA setup I think alot guys are using the 5.3 milled .015 and they are still able to use a TR 230 reverse split cam. That combo should put out some stout numbers just make sure and double check on the milling cause you don't want to have p/v issues.
