Default How would you change my combo?

I'm pretty unsatisfied with the performance of my engine as it is and I'd like to reconfigure it this winter. Here's what I have at the moment:

Stock shortblock
MLS head gaskets
CNC ported 241 heads from about 2001-2002
TR 224 Cam on a 112 LSA
85MM FAST Intake
Hooker LTs

The heads are obviously old tech from a company that's now defunct. I'm pretty sure they've got excessively oversized ports and flow numbers in the 280 range, so there's room for improvement there.

I'm looking at getting the PRC Stage 2.5 5.3 heads, since there seems to be a general consensus that they're the best "bang for the buck" heads out there. My DCR is about 8.15 right now and with no other changes, my DCR will increase to 8.62 with those heads. That should pick up my throttle response and midrange quite nicely.

I guess my biggest concern is with my cam. It's obviously the most popular cam out there, but can it be improved on with a custom grind using some of Comps newer lobe designs?

Mapping out my goals here - this car is a 95% street car and a 5% track car. I do not want to have to spin it to 6500+ to make good power, so slapping in a huge cam is not feasible. I'd like to keep my RPM range right around where it is now, shifting at 6100-6200.

As of right now, my best time with the car is a 12.44@115.93 w/ a 1.85 60' time. Obviously that can be improved with a stronger rearend and clutch, which will be going in this winter. I'd just like to get the car to the point where it would run an 11.99@120+ even with a crappy 60' time like it has.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

I just finished my new HC combo. Ported 243 heads (64cc) and a Comp Cams 228/232 .600/.601 111LSA. DCR is about 8.5. Drives nice on the street. Good midrange and upper power. Had a TR224 in the car about 3 years ago w/ 241 heads. This combo is definetly stronger. I like it

Yeah, I custom made it. Do a search and you'll find the thread I started on it. Works great!
