I almost have all the parts for the installas follows:

melling hi vol oil pump
tr230 cam
comp hardened pushrods

patriot springs
misc gaskets
ls2 timing chain

already have:

What else does everyone recomend????

I have to pull the heads to replace the lifters as I have a stickng one that is intermittent.

Also, am I better off sticking with the stock heads or upgrade.....TR said the patriots would not make a difference.

I guess it depends on how much you want to spend.

Buddy of mine made more power than my cam only, with a smaller cam but stock ported heads.

AFR's will make power but so will a lot of others, again it goes back to what I said at the start.

As for your cam choice, I am running a special for custom cams. The lobes listed are very close to comp XE-R. I could get you a 230/224 if your interested.

That's the cam I am going with(if I don't do an APS kit). Predator Z spec'd the cam and also suggested the PRC 2.5 heads and that's probably what I will go with. I know a lot of guys will say the AFR 205 heads but for the price difference I don't know if it's worth it. I have a set of AFR heads on my 406 so I am not AFR hatin.

Regardless let us know what you decide and what kind of power you make.

PredatorZ and PatG both gave the nod to the PRC 2.5 5.3L heads to accompany my TR230 and that's exactly what I'll be going with in the near future.

OP....Looks like you've got a good package ready to install. Just make sure you have a good tuner. The TR230 can be....challenging!

+1 I know someone in my area that has a GTO with this setup and it works very well. Good gains.

I have cam only right now 400/375 (M6) but will do heads over the winter here.

Are you M6 or A4? You could expect between 380-400 at the wheels and the heads could add an additional 25-40 at the wheels.

i made 395rwhp stock heads on my auto with a vig 3200 stall without a pulley. but thats with a MTI X1 230/227. also another guy made 39x with the same cam i have. just to give u a good guess. look on thunder racing site. they have dyno numbers on that cam.

I would get the prc 2.5 5.3's or a set of ported 243's. GReat on price and performance. Or you will be very pleased with out them also. That cam pakage is a great performer. Heads will give you just a bit more power.

Also search for Gilbot, he made 400 even at the wheels with the TR230, bolt-ons minus a pulley, and a PT4000 converter.

Default heads

JR Racing

the patriot heads 5.3?????? hOW MUCH MORE POWER???? I am wondering why Thunder Racing said to stay away from the patriots with this cam as it wouldn't produce that much of an improvement.

I to called up Thunder Racing, and asked them about cams for my setup(Cam only), as well as a good head to work with it. I was leaning toward the Trex, but they gave me a even better one.....for my app. Anywho, when we got to talking about heads the guy told me that i should probably get rid of my patriots. Just because 241's will do the job just as good if not better. When i asked him why, he responded with, thats what the cam was built around, stock heads. Absolutely no porting.

I am still not sure what to make of this. Just wanted a second opinion on the matter.

+1, have the same set up as the OP'er. M6 4.10 etc .. I have a pulley which i didnt see he listed, but I did 400/373. With heads listed above which everyone from PredatorZ, PatG, TSP, etc .. everyone has told me PRC 5.3 2.5's are the way to go with this cam. I hope to be in the 440 hp range.

I would say do ls7 lifters, and trays while in there as well. I had to also upgrade my injectors ( cam only) .
