Default engine pros

my buddy picked up a 99 LS1 with 150K hard miles ,it runs like a champ ,what can we expect when the bore is checked? Is it likely we can do oversize pistons ?what .005 over is max? is it likely worn past that?looking at all options, doing budget build.Would honing and re-ring be a reasonable possibility?I just dont know how these alloy blocks typically wear. Thanks

If the engine is still running fine chance's are you wouldn't have to hone much to clean up the cylinder's. The stock 346 bore is 3.898" you can hone to a 347 3.908" bore. But you'll have to buy new pistons. My $.02 save your money, dont blow the engine, and when you have enough buy some forged rod's hone it to a 347 and throw in some new forged pistions, reuse the stock crank with all new bearings (cam, crank, main) and then give her hell. Then you'll have a nice new forged SB to do what you want.

I should have mentioned is that this is a pull out engine that he heard run.The seller said the engine smokes on hard hard de-cell,now I think all we will do is valve seals and run it.Based on what you are saying is these cylinders dont get out of round all that much with tons of miles.

Isnt smoking on hard decel more of a ring issue than valve stem seals??
