Default sounds like a slinky inside motor

ok heres the deal. a buddy of mine has a 04 GTO. he bought with 23k on it. just after his 30 day warrentee went, the motor started making a slinky sounding noise. we ran a compresion test on all the cylenders and one is low, can not remember what it was.

we are thinking that it is a piston ring. the car sputters a lil bit but is still very drivable. could this be a broken spring? it has a mild cam in it, or is it a def RING issue?

the reason iam asking this ? is. he wants to put another motor in it. he doesent care if the thing gos fast he just wants it to drive. i told him i could get him a dencent 5.3 liter and swap into there and he said sure. the deal is if i buy the 5.3 wich is 150 bucks from a local junkyard and installed it my self he will give me his old long block? does this sound decent? its only 150 plus some labor for me

and what could the problem be with the motor. if it is a ring what do i do?

Sounds like a bad deal! anything from the junk yard is a gamble plus why in the hell would you put a 5.3 in a heavy *** goat. If he has a low cylinder then he should do a rebuild. If you guys pull the motor that saves on the labor and break down the block that saves on labor. Parts is what going to cost you a slight hone can run 150-500 bucks and a set of forge pistons will run you around 500-900 dollars and depending on the rest of the motor ,bearing and son it can cost close to 1800 to 2k to rebuild it to stock minus the forge pistons and cam. But by him giving you a long block worth well over 1k working or not is not right.

Sounds like a very bad deal for your friend. Junkyard motor? You dont even know whats wrong with the current engine and you want to trade him a junkyard motor for an ls2 w/23k on it.. ??? Helluva guy. Sounds like your taking advantage of your friend wether you were meaning to or not its a very bad deal for him.

ok this gos out to OUTLAWZ and 99BLANCOSS. i have seen alot of your post's and i know both of you are great guys. iam not screwing this guy over this is what he wants. the reason he is doing this is because he does not have the money to " to do a complete rebuild" if he did he would, another reason is that he wants to run **** gas in the car. he knows he can with the 5.3. that will save him money right there. i have known this guy for about 8 years now and HE came up with the idea. he doesent care. he just has a GTO because he likes the car, not to race it. he loves the way it looks handles and how comfortable those seats are. i do not screw my freind over.

he came to me with the deal, and i accepted. the motor that iam gettin comes with a 1 year warrentee has 53k on it and i have seen running. he gave me the ok to buy the motor. the reason iam gettin it so cheap is because i have a very nice hook up at a local junkyard. iam not gonna screw a great freind of mine over.

all i was asking in this post was if it was a "OK" deal for me and what do YOU GUYS think is wrong with the motor that is in his car. THATS IT

so if i can get a lil insight on what could possibly be rong please chime in.

the cylender hold preasure for a couple mins and then slowly decreases.

plus this motor has 853 castings on it and head studs he has no idea what was done to it nor does he care. he just wants it to run well.

and please dont call me son. i really dont like it all to much

How can we possibly tell whats wrong when you havent even opened the engine up to find out whats wrong. You have no idea either and your throwing a junk yard engine into his car so you can get his ls2.

Yes your screwing your friend over IMO. It's not something I would do to a friend of mine. IMO your taking advantage of him.
Doesnt matter to me, I dont know him and am not here to preach morals but you asked for our opinions and you got it.
If you really wanted to help him you would open things up a little and see whats wrong before taking his ls2 for a 5.3 find on the side of the road engine. Your only intersest is in yourself it sounds like. Yes he's your friendf and he is in need so why not help yourself at the same time right? THAT IS WHAT YOUR DOING AND YOU DONT LIKE BEING TOLD THAT.

I drove 70 miles on Easter morning to help a strnager with a spark plug swap as his hand were to big for #8 and he needed the car for work the next day. I treated a total stranger better than what your trying to do to a friend.

Want to really help him ... find out whats wrong with his ls2 before you steal it from him. Yea strong words and now you have me moralizing... I'm dopping from the thread, your going to do it anyway.

It was a typo on my part i meant so on. Hell im a young cat 27. But The motor for you is ok if you have the money to rebuild it if it needs it. Your bud if wants the junk yard motor thats on him. But understand that it just looks bad. But it is ok if your buddies then he is in good hands.

IM OUT!
