Default ms4 too big for ls1?

im not too familiar with cams or ls1s in general but i was talking to a bud thats in the middle of having a shop build up his motor and he told me he went with an ms3 and i asked him why instead of ms4 he said it was because ls1 motors are too small and it makes them hard to be tuned and that the ms4 was for bigger stroker motors like 383 and up etc... ive personally never heard of this but maybe theres some truth to it...anyone??

Some have issues and some don't. Definitely should check to see if you have enough clearance when installing an MS4.

A lot of guys run this cam on 346ci engines though. I don't know what your friend is talking about lol.

Someone will chime in and say the MS4 is a great cam for the LS1. Someone will chime in and say its too big for a street car. Someone will chime in and say they can't be tuned very well. Someone will chime in and say they can be IF the tuner knows what they are doing. Sounds to me like the shop has given their advice, they probably know what the owner wants and are trying to reach that goal.

I have the ms4 in my car and its fine. I drive it everyday its not wet out. There should be no PTV issues as long as the heads have not been decked from the stock measurements. It is a high rpm cam, and if you dont have the supporting mods and gears or stall for it then it would be a issue around town, but in my car M6 with 4.10's its fine to me.

As far as piston to valve clearance goes you should have sufficient room with a stock head and gasket. BUT as always, it is recommended that you verify your clearance before firing because there are variances in manufacturing of the camshafts, timing sets, blocks, etc.

If you're asking if it's too much camshaft to drive....it's sort of a personal issue. It is a very aggressive camshaft designed to squeeze all the peak HP possible out of a car (great for drag racing with the proper combo of parts!) For the average daily driver (and myself getting towards old age every day), I tend to like a bit smaller camshaft. But many do drive theirs daily without any issues what-so-ever.

Let us know if we can help with your combo.
