Default What is your opinion on Flowmasters

On my C5 Corvette, I have 2 Flowmaster 40 series mufflers right behind the transaxle, in the center, under the rear compartment. I have a trans cooler and a diff cooler outboard on each side, where the mufflers usually are.
I like the Flowmaster sound, they are real popular for road racing, but they are so damm loud inside the car. At 2000rpm, they really punish my ears even with earplugs. This is a road race car, but I have been having fun driving on the street tuning and testing. I'm thinking of wraping the mufflers with kevlar wrap, or some heat shield to keep the noise down, Before I spend $100 and a lot of time on that, I want to hear what you guys think will sound good with my motor. Would I be better with a different muffler?? It has to be short, straight in and out. I have headers into 3" high flow cats, 2.5" on back with a X crossover, over the axle, into the mufflers, and out the back. Thanks.

The Flows have that drone you are talking about, and to me are teh BEST sounding muffler EVER. But they are loud. I can't tell you about wrapping them, as I have never done that, so not sure there I guess it MIGHT help, but would not think too much though if at all. I have found that Dynomax (NOT there Bullets of course) are pretty much teh quietest muff out.

I was going to use the flowmaster single chambers when I went to true duals. They were really loud but worse they droned so bad it was truly unpleasant to drive.
Have full sized dynomax mufflers now and its great, and the way these things are designed I'm not loosing any power with them.

The only thing that will fit back there is a Borla Oval. They call it a Turbo muffler, but it is straight through with packing. That has to be quieter than the Flowmasters. They are Stainless so that may help with the heat issues also. Yes, I hate to give up that Flowmaster sound, but my ears need a break.

(1)So you need 2.5" in/out?
(2) inlet/outlet locations (center/center, offset/center, offset/offset , etc....)?
(3) Max L, H, and W ?

The Borla Turbo are 4x9 oval, they are only 13" long. That's the only thing that will fit back behind the diff. I did manage to find a used set of pipes over the diff, so I can make a complete new system with the Borlas, and keep the Flowmasters for track days.
