Does the valley cover on a lq4 come off straight up or so you have to take out something else besides the knock sensors?

LQ4...isn't that a Gen III? That (Gen III) valley cover pulls off after removing the bolts and knock sensors. There are seals at the base of the knock towers that may need some persuasion.
