Default Truck Intake vs Car Intake performance

I am in the process of building a 440 ERL based motor for my Pontiac. I am interested in using a truck intake for added low end response and overall torque production. I am curious to know if there have been any comparison test's performed to show the difference in power of the truck vs car intake. I do not wish the engine to make power past 62-6400. Are there any drawbacks to the truck intake. I believe I have enough hood clearance to run it. A FAST 102mm intake is too expensive, plus I would like to run a factory TBSS engine cover.

fast makes a truck intake also. if you have the room, run it. ive read/researched that the truck intakes have a better intake runner path to the heads

I would like to save the $900 and invest it somewhere else. I should mention that this will be running ported LS3 heads.

I dont know what your goals for the car are, but a stock intake will choke that 440 ERL..The FAST 102's are supposed to provide plenty of low end torque due to the increased runner lengh.

i do believe car craft did a test on this a few years ago, and it showed the truck manifold made more power than alot of aftermarket units.

If you will do some searching, there is a thread on this forum I believe that covers exactly what you are wanting to know. Maybe someone else can remember the name of the thread? The one I remember had air flow numbers and I'm almost certain dyno numbers.

Found this thread: *l92/L76 Intake Manifold Flow Comparison* by *Richard@WCCH* who is one of the sponsors on this forum.

Check out Mast Motorsports websight. They have engine dyno charts with both intakes. If you study them close you'll see the truck intake has better bottom and topend. Also Comp cams commented in a vvt article that the truck intake is slightly better. This surprised me as I had seen the flowchart from the thread mentioned above and it clearly shows the car intake flowing better. I guess flow numbers aren't everything.

You are building an ERL 440 stroker but a fast intake is too expensive....?

^^ Ditto.

I understand making a budget, I'm an M.E. - it all comes down to the dollar when creating a design. But you will most likely have investing in parts that will not live to their potential especially with your engine size.

That being said, it seems you potentially wasted money in other areas now... Its all a system as you already know, but I hope you dont neglect. Just food for thought......

I don't see why it is surprise that I am looking for information on these manifolds. Yes, I am building an ERL motor, but does not mean I just throw $900 at FAST for an intake. I am doing my research and asking questions of people that have more experience with the LS motor than I do. Since I am not at the stage yet to purchase an intake, I am gathering info beforehand. If a production LS3 intake would be better, then it would make more sense to buy one of them used, and save the money for other items. This is my first LS motor build, not the first motor I have built. Thanks.

Is a Fast going to make more power before 6200-6400 rpms? Is a fast going to make more power period? I would think the High Ram would but It sounds like its out of the powerband the OP is looking for.

fast are WAY over rated , their first intakes with wilson were their best

you could look at the edelbrock pro-flow intake as well

you really think fast is way over rated? i mean as for the truck intake it gained 15 hp peak over the ls6 manifold and gained across the board as a whole...people spend 300 hundred dollars on cold air intakes all the time and 200 on udp's for what 5-10 hp gains?

the 102's? without a doubt.....

90/92's were great, and when ported right were pretty awesome..... And I dont mean ported by a regular vendor churning them out like donuts...

yup its a WAY over priced piece of plastic

udp's are worthless too , which is why the 1 on my 04 wont be going back on with the new motor , ill be glad to enjoy the wonders of a/c at idle again , lol
