Default MAF questions

I searched for a MAF thread but could not find one. So my question is I am building an Iron 408 with a fast 102 intake and 92TB. What size/ brand of MAF should I use. I do not have an abundance of cash so I am not looking for the most expensive piece out there but I want something reliable that will tune well.

I see a lot of 85mm that people seem to be using but should I be looking more for a 100mm or will 85 get the job done.

Looking for a 500+ numbers NA and will be boosting down the road if that helps clear any questions.

I have been using a 85mm maf on my setup. I am going to go to a SD tune though. 85mm made good numbers for me, I am curious to see if I pick up any power getting the bottle neck out from the transition of the 100mm lid to the 102mm throttle body.

The 85mm GM MAFs are much easier to tune. Though the 100mm MAF like ours will make more power. It does require a bit more tuning than the 85mm unit. I run our TSP 100mm MAF in my FAST 92/92 set up. It would do even better one a 102 set up when compared to a GM 85mm MAF as it won't have to have such a big transition going to the 102mm TB. I would also use the F.T.P. lid to compliment the larger MAF.

I was pulling vacum with an 85mm maf on a 90/90 setup but it still made 550 to the wheels. I had set it up to go mafless on the 102/102until I came across a 100mm maf on the corvette forum for $100.

Here in Australia it's a rarity to see a MAF as even most basic boltons usually delete it.

I haven't used a MAF on any of our cars for last 7 years.

What would be an advantage of going SD? I have heard that MAF are easier to tune and the more you plan to DD you car the better a MAF is to have. Now I have seen a few threads that turn into debates over which is better and makes it hard to narrow down what would be best for my build. Seeing as how everyone has different builds with different needs.

There is no need for a MAF, it is simple an extra device fitted for emissions.

Generally MAFLESS cars have better throttle response.

Our original bolton LS1 was MAFLESS tuned.
As was the head cammed LS1
As is our current cammed LS3

Our previous bolton manual HSV GTO was MAFLESS tuned and picked up 0.1 in the quarter and improved fuel economy.

Also have a MAFLESS tune on friends manual HSV GTO which is very nice to drive with standard diff gears and 235 243 .621" .624" 113 cam
