AC Compressor Clicking On Every 4 Seconds

AC Compressor Clicking On Every 4 Seconds When I run my defroster, my AC compressor is trying (and failing to?) click on every 4 seconds or so. I read elsewhere this is possibly due to low AC coolant pressure.
1) Is low pressure the most likely candidate to cause the 4- second clicking?
2) If I simply unplug the electric line to the compressor, the clicking stops. Is leaving it unplugged until I get the pressure recharged next week or next year going to harm anything?

Disconnecting the compressor wont hurt anything, just wont be as efficient in defrosting your windows.

Thanks! I figured a constant clicking wasn't doing the compressor any favors. I'll get the charge looked at hopefully before summer.
