Default Serpentine Belt Walk - Help Please

Hello All,

I'm having an issue that just popped up on my LS3 conversion, and I would appreciate some help.

This may be a bit long, so bear with me...

I had a 418ci supercharged LS3 engine in my 2006 Corvette. I ran this setup all last year, with no problems. Oh, BTW, this car was drag raced every weekend, so the engine was regularly ran at high RPM. No problems at all with this setup.

Over the winter, I decided to put the Vette back stock, and I pulled the race engine and installed it into my new little drag car.

Same engine, same blower, but I had to fab an alternator bracket and run a 1-wire alternator, which was mounted backwards due to space. There were no problems with the belt, other than the alternators didn't like to be run backwards, and overheated and failed rather quickly.

This week I decided to eliminate the alternator problem, and I installed the exact same alternator/PS bracket from the Vette onto the drag car. I installed the exact same alternator onto the drag car. The only difference is there is no PS pump on the drag car. Otherwise, the front of the engine is EXACTLY the same, using the same parts, as was on the Vette.

Now, my belt wants to walk toward the front of the balancer pulley. It moves one groove as soon as I crank it over, and then stays there.

Again, these are the exact same parts that I ran in the Vette, just transplanted to a different car. Only difference is no PS pump or pulley.

Any idea what could cause this? ATI balancer, no idlers/tensioners that seem bad, new belt, etc. Is it even possible that the new belt I purchased could be bad in some way? I was not expecting this issue AT ALL.

Any help would be appreciated. I have a race this weekend, and would really like to get this resolved.

Post a pic of the FEAD. Could be you don't have enough belt wrap with the PS removed...

A Katech non-spring loaded tensioner will cure this. I've run the Corvette accessory placement on 2 different cars without the PS pump. On the first swap I would shred belts. Installed the Katech tensioner and problem solved.
