Default LS7 dry sump capacity & design

Can someone tell me what is the oil capacity of the stock LS7 remote reservoir? I am anticipating the possible need to fabricate my own remote tank due to the limited space in a 2nd gen engine bay. I have a few ideas, but need to know what minimum volume of oil I need.

Also, I have been thinking about what kind of baffles/traps might be integrated inside to help remove air from the scavenged oil that is returned. Anyone know of a proven "static" system of removing entrapped air? I may be spitting hairs here and creating a problem that doesn't exist - just thinking out loud and welcoming input...

thanks.

Hi LC,

It depends entirely on what you are going to use the car for, and what sump and pump you are going to run.

But to summarize for you. if you were to use Dailey Engineering off the shelf V8ST spec 3 stage dry sump pump and pan which is what I use in my race car we use 8 litre's total and that includes the oil running through two oil coolers. See photo attached of my car winning the 1 hour race this weekend.

If you use the stock dry sump pan and stock two stage g'rotor pump then providing you don't rev the engine consistently over 6,250 RPM you can also get away with an 8 litre tank, if you are going to run over around 6,800 RPM you will need 10 litre's plus a very good separate oil cooler.

If you are using the car as a daily driver only, then 8 litre's will be fine.

New Lap record to boot, 75ºC water, 85ºC oil, running through to 7,250 rpm in each gear. 735ci [bore 4.165"] stock standard Ls7 manifold and 90mm T/B, Cam Motion cam shaft, Hydraulic Howard cam followers, 700BHP @ 7,000 RPM and 545 Ftlbs @ 6,000 RPM. Car weights 1200 KG's.

Thanks Kiwi (and v8sten) for a very precise answer - just what I was looking for.

Congratulations! Nice vehicle you got there...

Aviaid make a baffle for the stock LS7 pan as well as a tank insert to help break up and disperse air bubbles pockets from the tank. They also make a cool little external 2nd stage scavenge pump.

Katech has almost the exact same setup, except their kit uses an ARE oil pan and a Peterson oil tank in place of the stock pan and tank with baffles.

The Dailey system would fkn sweet though! And actually, last time I talked to them they didn't make a kit for the LS7 /Z06's that retained AC. And I quote, "We only make race car ****" hahaha But guess what? Now they do and guess who's getting a call LMAO! Dailey hahaha

Hi Shov,

You are absolutely right, I have used Aviad's twin pick-up and centre trap box along with their secondary scavenge pump, and it does a very good job at very reasonable money.

The ARE dry sump and pump system is better but not a lot less money than the Dailey full proof Ls7 dry sump system, so thats why I didn't go ahead with that 4 years ago when I first purchased that system.

As a matter of fact I still have the ARE sump and pump, brand new, in my surplus parts, so if some one is keen to buy that I would let it go cheap.

I also have one of Katech larger scavenge stage g'rotor "Blue pump" in my surplus gear, and again I would sell that cheap.

Cheers,

Mark.

KiwiKid / Mark I've sent you a PM about your ARE / Katech stuff.

Also, I spoke with someone at Dailey and they said regarding the dry sump kit that retains the AC is something they did for Moran Motorsports a while back and directed me to speak to them.

So I called MM and the guy I spoke with about their Dailey Z06 system they're still testing / developing it. So I need to send them an email so they can respond appropriately because the gentlemen I spoke to didn't have much info about it and wasn't even to familiar with it.

Hopefully soon I should have more info on it
