Oil pan alignment question
Oil pan alignment question So doing the cam swap soon and obviously need to drop the oil pan to pull the oil pump. Swapped to a 4l80 and decided not to run the lower inspection piece that bolts to the oil pan (doesn't see a ton of street time so it doesn't bother me). My question is does the alignment of the oil pan matter AS much since the bell housing doesn't attach to it? I do understand the importance of it when it does bolt to the bell housing just was wondering when it doesn't. I am going to get it as flush to the rear as possible I'm just curious for this situation.
At least on the manual trans cars, the oil pan can not protrude beyond the back of the block. If it does and you tighten the trans, it can crack the block.

Thanks for the reply I crawled under today and literally nothing is in the vicinity of the oil pan with that inspection cover not on. I'm going to use a blade to get it as flush as possible with the rear but didn't know if anyone had any input on how critical it would be.

I have seen the oil pan to far forward, closer
to the balancer , with the distance of a washer
between pan and trans and it was not leaking,
there was no bolt in belhousing to oil pan.
That would crack something obviously.
