Thoughts on the metal on the oil plug? I am not well versed on the GM motors, is this a normal amount of ware and tare metal or am I staring down the barrel of a rebuild?

Its definitely from a Van. Those motor mounts and the remote reservoir hose off the power steering pump are van specific.

Look on the pass side of the block between the head and the water pump. There is a date code cast in there.

I have seen worse but until you check things like compression and leak down it's hard to say. would also be nice to get it running and see what oil pressure is like.

Things like Work vans and work trucks get the least amount of maintenance possible.

Could be 14 year, J for October, and 06 for 6th day.

Unless it the 14 day of October 2006.

On The back of the block there is a machined pad with 8 digits that are dot matrixed in that would be the Vin number.

Unfortunately there is nothing in that vin location. Been lead there by others already.

I'm thinking the 14 Oct 06 is more logical. Thanks!

If its an 06, it has floating rods. VERY strong bottom end. I'm making almost 4 digits on mine with pump gas. If its a 4.8, its even stronger.

It does seem weird to find an 06 DBW Gen 3 engine in a 2012 van.. Maybe he wasn't telling the truth about where it came from?

How do I tell if it has floating rods? Not sure I completely understand 4 digits.... I am a Jeep guy so we are all about geared down slow and crawling over stupid crazy stuff

Agreed on the source info, it's second hand at best from the dad of the young guy that bought it originally....

I found the date code casting on the block, 14J06. So far I think that means 14 October 2006, am I on the right track in my thinking? This casting is on the front of the block right behind the water pump.

I was told the original donor was a U-Haul van. So far I have found that in 06 the 4.8 was only offered in the 2500 Express van. So.... Can I use parts from any 06 truck application or is this motor van specific. There are many different part numbers like fuel pumps etc... Any thoughts or help?

Nearly everything from every gen 3 motor is interchangeable. That includes 4.8, 5.3, 5.7 (LS1/LS6), 6.0 (LS2/LQx), etc. The differences in stock parts is minor. For example, only the aluminum blocks have been drilled for the lower mount alternator bracket that is used on the F-body, but you can buy the bracket and just drill/tap and iron block to make it work. Almost every other part is interchangeable besides pistons because of bore sizes.

Thank you! About the only thing I will need to relocate is the a/c compressor for my project.

Speaking of engine #s ,I see time and time again guys referring to #s as stamped #s which........ they mean, and are referring to is actually casting numbers. I don't know if they are confused or just don't know the difference ? There are 3 different types of #s ...... cast, stamped and laser etched. I don't believe there are any stamped numbers on LS engines , that ended with Gen I series . LS engine just have cast and laser etched to my knowledge.
