ls3 head vs l92 Help
I"m new to engine world and don't really have anyone to learn from so i've been reading lots so any help is appreciated!!
I"ve got a option to buy a set of GM Performance Parts CNC ported LS3 cylinder heads brand new for $900 dollars for the pair with offset intake rocker arms. Is this a good deal??
Because i can buy a set of l92 heads with everything for 750 dollars...
I know the ls3 valves are hollow is the only difference really and the ported heads flow between 10-30 hp over the base ls3 heads..
I"m also still trying to find a 6 litre engine or 6.2 engine..
What would you do??
Thanks
For reference, they are about $650/ea. new and offset rockers are about $80 if you are just getting the intakes. So you are getting $1380 retail for $900.L92 and LS3 castings are the same. I've seen some references to 68cc vs. 70cc chambers but they are also +/- 1cc. The CNC version flows about 10% more and I think that's a better way of looking at it. That's significant. The LS3 heads may have a slightly better valve spring on them as well but if you're doing heads and such, you'll want something more than LS3 springs anyway.
My advice? Get the CNCs now as it's a lot of work and not an insignificant amount of $ for fluids, gaskets, etc. to swap later. And 10% more flow for $250? Steal IMO.
Plenty of folks making great power with 6.0 and LS3-type heads. 6.2 is 12 cubic inches larger but also a bit more efficient with the bigger intake valve. The larger cylinder bore lets it breathe a bit better. If you can budget for it, get the 6.2. If you would like to save some money and not sacrifice much power, start with a 6.0. I'm doing this exact thing right now on my V...if I were not starting with a 6.0 already, I'd be looking for a 6.2 or 7.0 but I have other plans long-term.
Feel free to look at my build thread. It is by far not the definitive 6.0 with LS3-type heads thread, but we got into it a bit about square vs. cathedral on the 4" bore in recent posts.
