What can I use to clean coils with?

What can I use to clean coils with? I am in the process of changing my valve covers and re-locating my ignition coils and i've come across the coils being heavily caked with dirt, grime, debris from 17 years of use.
I would like to thoroughly clean them before re-installing them. What cleaners would you recommend I use, that wont cause any short/long term problems?

I use Greased Lightning for anything exterior engine cleaning related. It’s an awesome degreaser. I get it at Home Depot by the gallon. It’s a light acid, so be careful if you have any polished or machined aluminum close by.
The coils are plastic bodied, I'd just wipe it with a damp cloth. Stuff will come right off. A plastic utility knife blade is handy for dislodging stubborn stuff. You gotta be careful about chemicals with plastics unless you're some kind of guru that knows what is and isn't compatible.
