Default MSD fitment in an LS7 C5.....

Not sure where to post this, but here goes. Is there any way the LS7 MSD intake will clear the firewall on an LS7 installed in a C5, without cutting? I'm seeing there's apparently no way to avoid cutting the firewall. Has anyone tried lowering the motor? This is a definite bummer. Not that my C5 is above being cut, but I'd rather not do it if there's a workaround......

you could try shorter motor mount or shim between the frame and cradle (I think someone makes a kit)or if you drop the cradle you could use washers
you could loosen the cradle and let it drop quarter inch to see if it would clear,to see where your at
i would start there before cutting

Mike I had the same problem in my Chevelle because I purposely put the engine as far back as possible, when I built the car. What I did was I cut the power brake hose nipple off flush and filled the hole with a couple large washers and a through bolt/nut…sealed it with black RTV and it’s basically flush. I then used an Aeroquip bulkhead and matching nut for my power brake vac hose. I mounted the bulkhead over in the recessed area a couple inches over, which aims it at an angle also toward the booster. Works flawlessly. It’s the booster nipple that’s in the way, so this mod works great. I wish I had pics…call me to discuss if you need to.

Me and Double06 have been talking about installing tall deck in our C6.
and he was telling me that the ZR1 engine bracket about eight of a inch shorter than ls 3 and 7.
additional clearance for the ls 9 blower
hope this helps

That's the first I've heard of that and don't think its true. There has been a few Z06's with LS9 swaps and no mention about different engine cradles. The LS9 blower is pretty much flush to the cowl.

Its the engine mount that is lower. The thing that is between the donuts and the block. I compared it to my Z06 the bottom part on Z06 is say .550 and the ZR1 is .400. I bought ZR1 mounts and compared. That being said I think the later years LS7s like 2012 Corvette or so got the same mount as the ZR1. The other side motor mount I have has LS7/LS9 engraved on it - this one just says LS9. I have a 2006 and the area I am pointing to is thicker by .150 or so. A guy on Corvette Forum did the swap and turned out it worked. That is how I know about it.

Thanks Double06 for clearing things up for me.
I didn’t explain about the brackets very well.
maybe this info will help grinder11 from cutting on his car

Thanks a whole bunch, Scott and everyone who posted any help!! I want to go with the Mamo ported MSD next Spring. I think going with both spacers AND the nipple mod Scott suggested would ensure no problems. I like!!

Which motor mounts do you have? Hinson makes some that are 3/8 shorter than stock, that's what I put on my C6Z because I plan on doing a ported MSD in the future.

Ive got the stock LS1 mounts, but IIRC, I had to alter 1 side to clear something, but whatever mod I did was a clearance notch of some kind, and had nothing to do with the height. GREAT INFO GUYS!!! I've saved the thread to my phone. I'm thinking I should pick up at least 25-30whp. Any idea what the mounts cost? I'd think they can't be too much.

The aluminum mounts are around $100 each the Hinson stuff is like $200+. The Hinson stuff will lower it by 3/8 of an inch which is probably what you need but check. The aluminum mounts are only about .150 lower. The Hinson is a urethane mount so you will feel the engine vibration more and also you will need to transfer your OEM motor mount heat shields as the urethane does not like heat.
