Default Exhaust Studs

Hi all,

Looking at swapping to exhaust studs on my L92, but "LS" kits seem to come in packs of 12, whereas my manifolds were only held on by 8 bolts and 4 dowel pins.

Are the dowel pins removable? i.e are they threaded and can be removed similar to a sheared off bolt? Or are they plain old dowel pins and aren't threaded and then I'd need to get the heads tapped with the correct thread?

Or do I just keep the 4 dowel pins and run 8 studs?

I thought this would be a common question but nothing seemed to come up in google when I looked... maybe I'm using the wrong terminology?

I've never seen dowel pins for that in these motors. Sounds almost like somebody cut the heads off of some bolts.

I think I'd try unscrewing them first.

Yeah.. Definitely not "dowels". These motors use 6 per head.

As said above 6 bolts on each side. I just looked at the L92 in my 80 Camaro. Same as the LS6 I have in another hot rod.
Pic of a typical LS header I've used in the past showing the header bolt holes.

Those “dowel pins” are broken exhaust bolts. Every used set of heads that come in my shop has at least one. Very, very common. Studs will resolve this problem ultimately. If you buy stainless studs, use a little anti-seize on the stud and the nut also. Not a bad idea to use it on all exhaust bolts/studs, but it’s mandatory with stainless.

Going with some Titanium ones. I’ll probably throw a little CeraTec on just to be on the safe side.

Don't bother with titanium. Wrong answer.

Get the old ones out first. Use a pipe wrench and a couple of days of soaking in LOTS of the best penetrating oil you can get, butt don't be too surprised if any break off in the holes. Then Heli-Coil all the holes once the bolt remains are removed. Use stainless steel bolts to replace them, along with LOTS of aluminum powder anti-seize, or the stuff electricians call NoOx.
