Default Clearances help needed for FI

Hi there guys,

I am now building my new motor for my 98 Camaro. I have a LSX block and 383ci Lunati stroker kit, whose pistons are changed with 427ci Diamond pistons and total seal rings .

As for FI, I have an ez-94 turbo from Forced Inductions and a huge intercooler. So, the power levels I expect should be over 1000 rwhp.

The point is, I can not be sure regarding the clearances. In the diamond pistons' spec sheet, it says 0.0075inch for piston to bore clearance, and the ring celarances are 1.5 mm for the first and second ring and 3mm for the 3rd ring.

My workshop in Turkey tells me that with these clearances, the car will burn oil like hell, even though the power levels and the boost will be high in the engine.

Any comment on this will be highly appreciated. I do not want to ruin anything after spending a lot of time and money.

The sheet that came with diamond pistons can be found from the link below.

The 1.5/1.5/3mm is not clearances, but rather the thickness. The .0075" for the iron block will be about right. You could tighten it up slightly if you wanted, but I'd leave it. As for the ring gaps, I'd personally set them up WOT at that power level around 30 for the top and 32 for the bottom. I know most street guys will cringe at the thought of that wide a gap, so if you'd like you could go 28 for the 2nd instead. Again, you just have to decide what you're setting them up for, WOT or daily driving. Also, do you have a napier 2nd ring? You're going to want one for better oil control.

Hope that helps! Be prepared, because every engine builder will have a slightly different way to set them up, which is the only way to do it correctly in their own minds.

Thanks a lot Matt for the help. I will inform my builder tomorrow regarding your input. He is a very well known builder in Turkey, but generally on EVO and Impreza engines. I have been giving him all the needed advice regarding clearances etc. for my engine, after doing a research mainly on this board.

On top of that I also would like to thank Eric from Diamond Pistons as he was also very helpful to me on the phone. After getting my rings' part number, he confirmed that I have the right rings for the job

Yes you want bigger ring gaps for 1000 RWHP and the ring gaps have nothing to do with smoking whatsoever. I would also run around .030 on top to be safe. I also wouldn't run the pistons tighter at all than what Diamond recommends and that .0075 should be built in at those piston's bore size so you can check them. With more power you can run a little more clearance and vice verso but you are trying to make some serious power so do not underhone the bores. Eric Simone will tell you what to hone to based on your power level to be safe.
