oil pump question

oil pump question Guys,
I'm trying to chase down a low oil pressure problem in my motor, and a few guys have made some helpful suggestions on PM. One suggestion was a frozen pump bypass. Getting at the pump right now is a serious hassle given my set up, it means draining all fluids (incuding transmission) and pulling the engine and a lot of the drivetrain (midengine setups are awful in this regard).
So my questions are these -
1) is there a way to check that it is the oil pump bypass? Maybe by pressurizing the galley with external oil and blocking the oil filter housing?
2 what is the actual valve made of? If it is steel, is it possible to maybe dislodge it with a strong magnet?
Am I just fooling myself with shortcuts here?
