Why would you even consider distributor? An MSD box would allow much more timing control.

It is proven that at higher RPM the factry setup is unreliable. Some say it is the crank pickup giving bad readings to teh coils. You will find most Higher HP/RPM guys are making the swap over to a Distributor.

I am gonna give it a go with the coils, but since my motor is gonna see teh north side of 8K RPM, I may make the switch over to a dist. as well.

if funds permit the new sbc/ls block combo may be worth looking into. anyways as stated more than once 700 fwhp is no problem. just check with a few sponsors on here and they will be able to help out.

i know schwartz extreme performance sells a bunch of LS7´s for ultimas each year, they are stock GM ls7's with tweaks (porting and hi po parts) , cam and tune they dyno at 720+ Hp with 900 rpm idle on pump gas..

i would love to have that motown sbc/lsx block. but i heard about it to late and my 408 shortblock is almost complete.

and yeah, my stock coils started falling off at 7500 on my old motor.

this new one is goin to be seeing 8k quite frequently.

We got stock truck coils and are trying for 7800rpm...
it is already a carb engine and has been run to 7200rpm without failure and making 800hp on a small(200hp) nitrous shot...

should I can them and go to a distributor deal?

It is so much easier to go with a 598 NA big block. For $13K you can have a 985 FWHP / 813 FWTQ crate engine. I realize what this customer's goals are, but I'd try to convince him to think outside of the parameters that he is confining himself to, by trying to push that much power with the LS series engine. I'm not at all an LS hater; more cubic inches is just my favorite way to make reliable power.

How do you build in 14:1 comp?

I'm building an LS1 magneto setup at the moment that runs straight off the crank (no water pump) for a dragster project. I'm using a MSD Pro-Mag 12LT.

The plan is to build a 346 to keep costs down initially (stock block and crank). A set of aluminium rods and some decent pistons. It'll run on Methanol with a mechanical injection setup.

Just getting all the parts together at the moment.
