l92 cam help

Default l92 cam help

Looking for a cam.. Finally decided on an L92 engine.. Bottom end will be stock, and I will run a single plane gm intake or a victor intake.. I am planning on pulling the heads to upgrade springs etc.. My question is what cam should i put in there with the carb intake and 1 3/4 headers, and is there any need to touch the heads other than upgraded lift springs and maybe lighter valves?.. I believe its 376 cubes (6.2) and 10.5 to 1 comp...

I read that this cam, Comp Cams XR281HR, was great in another engine, anyone with experience on it?

I run the LG Motorsport G6X3 cam with the l92's. It makes great mid tq,sounds great at idle and drives around town with no problems. This is my 2nd cam for the l92's and the best so far.

What are your goals for this motor and car?What gear and trans are you running?I have the same motor as yours but in a 95 mustang./I'm running the the gm single plane carb intake with the stock cam for now.I'm also running a 350 turbo trans with a 4500 stall and 4.10 gears should run mid to low 11's

Its funny how no one has mentioned THE single most important thing. They just spout off cams blindly without knowledge.....

L92s have a cam phaser and .080" PTV clearance on both the intake and exhaust valves. Comp Cams has a cam that gained 70hp with the phaser and lost no torque anywhere! Pretty amazing what technology can allow you to do. (500hp with a cam/spring swap only).

You have some reading to do before you jump into an L92. I wish I had one, cam phasers are the way to go!!!

Thanks for the notes.. I plan on removing the VVT system in that I will be running a carb.. I think that is a computer only thing and not appropriate for this car..
to answer Black Mamba, The car will be a pro touring midrange power road race type car with 355 gears.. Manual trans 68 camaro 6 speed.. Looking for 550 hp at 6000 plus rpm..

Mike C, are you running a carb?? If anyone is, is a 750 enough cfm with the single plane GM mani? I have heard good things about that LG Motorsport G6X3 cam, and was considering that very one from some other posts I've read..

Were further along.. but this is some idea of the direction of the car...

Typical... carb guy takes off all the advances in technology because he cant use his "magic screwdriver" to fix everything if he doesnt

550hp in no way requires a carb...

EFI is perfect for that car, cars are tuned to be great at one point and you just have to deal with the other areas not being optimal. EFI is optimal everywhere for everything.

VVT is also perfect for this car, locked cam timing is also great at a point and you just have to deal with less than optimal performance everywhere else. VVT allows for the best low end possible, the best midrange, and the best high RPM HP. But who in the world would want that??

I know everyone has their reasons, obviously, its just disappointing to see goof technology be waisted.

Why didn't you buy a cheap 6.0L and be done? L92s aren't cheap.

Sweets10v8.. Einstein.. jesus man, step back from the edge.. Obviously this is not how YOU would build the car.. On the contrary, I did ponder using VVT and fuel injection (having more than a magic screwdriver in my toolbox) and just really don't want to.. Not because it would not run better, or make more power, or because its SOOOO complicated, but really because I don't want all of that in this car.. I mean i don't know how old you are, but i have been working and building fuel injection cars since they came out man.. Go run VVT, your right its definitely a great way to go being able to "phase" the cam in realtime. And will be huge in the future, but not for this particular car ok?

I removed the VVT from my build so I wouldn't have to through the time and expense of rewiring the thing. I may go back to it later, but we don't all have to build our cars the same way - thats the beauty of the hobby.

FWIW, I got my L92 for less than I could have picked up a crate LS2 for, so its not like they are made out of unobtanium.

I got the whole thing for 4 grand.. Those "truck" engines are like the deal of the century.. I have played around with chevy heads, and getting a factory head flowing over 300 cfm is a testament to the age we live in.. I mean the thing even has a forged crank / aluminum block.. Your right not unobtanium...

No carb here. Just seen the difference one's l92 cam did vs LG's cam. Lg's cam was smaller,but gained alot more.

You must not have read the whole post. I told him I understand everyone has their reasons, which means "I know everyone doesnt build what I would".

It was the magic screwdriver comment that got you wasnt it, lol. Gotta be able to have some fun on the internet...I think my dad was the magic screwdriver master. His screw driver could have cost like $200 and he would have still paid it. Oh and he was the master of gloss black paint too.

Im in my early 30s, so Im a little of both(keyboard puncher/magic screwdriver), but love technology.

Was this the one that was in ALABAMA that came out of a lite burned Escalade? If so I missed it by 30 mins the salesman said!

wow 900 bucks is incredible.. I saw that one for 2000 and almost moved on that too.. it was missing a bunch of things.. The one i ended up with i bought from a place in texas that gets them off the assembly line.. A intake might be cracked, or some other minor defect and they cant sell as new so they sell to him.. Its basically no miles untouched, new, and complete.. Think he has more of them.. The l92 is such a great engine, i feel like its a good deal.. But 900 bucks.. jesus.. You cant get a briggs and stratton lawnmower engine for that..

Guys I personally saw one listed on car-part.com a few months ago that a salvage yard in ALABAMA had listed for $1000 and they sold it for $900! I even pm'ed the link to a very trusted site sponsor and had him on three-way to ask the hard questions about the condition of the engine, when i called to purchase it. The salesman said that it had just sold for $900 about 30 mins before we called. But he said the engine was complete, but all of the intake and electrical components were burnt.

Heck, i got my 04 13k mile Lq4 the same way (lite fire) for $203.18 off of car-part.com from M&M Salvage in Stafford, VA. They had it listed as a core sale only and it only had a melted inkake and burnt electricals. LS1BLAZER can attest, as he installed the lq4 sb w/243's into my S10 and he just put the old 317's on his KB Supercharged SS Colorado.

no this one i picked up in michigan.........lite intake fire but all the coils were still good

I got mine for $400...but it did have the notorious valve issue and dropped a valve in the #4 cylinder, so I do have to do a bit of work to it...no major damage to the cylinder, just a hone, new piston(s) and head (which I will be buying a ported set anyway...

I figured that bare blocks were going for more than that so I jumped on it!
