Default Getting back to real vechiles have engine questions

After running with the Ford boys for the last 4 years, and having nothing but problems, Ive sold the thing and am starting to get back into real products again. So anyways Im building a 67 shortbox chevy that'll be LS powered and I have a huge number of questions. I got a cheap LQ4 tied to a 4L60-E and since the engine is burning oil it has to come apart. I keep looking at building a 408 or 434 ci stroker engine and wanted opinions on which way to go there. With the chassis we are building to go under this truck I am planning on road racing it and am wondering what would be the best way to go about converting it to dry sump oiling? I have found a LS7 oil pan, windage tray, and gaskets, was thinking that perhaps it would be easy to use those parts, and then add an aftermarket external pump and tank and build custom lines to complete the system. Would this work or would I need an oil pump out of an LS7? This engine will be getting twin turboed and intercooled. I have an LS2 intake and conversion throttle body to use on the top half of the engine. What would you guys recommend for a rotating assembly, heads, and valvetrain? Thanks in advance.

Welcome to LS1Tech and LS motors. There are seemingly countless combinations of parts out there for the LS motors; from budget build to high-end top dollar stuff. So it really depends on your goals and more importantly your budget. I would post your questions in the Conversions & Hybrids section here. There are some pretty ingenious people there with a lot of information to help.

The install of the engine into the chassis isnt an issue. We are simply going to fab up a new trann crossmember and build motor mounts for the truck. My main question is on converting an LQ9 from wet sump stock oiling to dry sump LS7 style oiling. I have a pretty good idea on what to use for engine internals but this is my main question mark.

My thoughts... Get a LS7 crank and have it balanced for your aftermarket rods and pistons.
This will give you a dry sump LS crank with a 4" stroke, which should put your motor in the 408" area.
You will probably need the LS7 timing chain and cover to make it work (as the wet sump units have the internal oil pump).
Don't forget the LS7 oil pump, and a 2009 LS7 oil pan and pickups (previous versions have a flaw, do a search for more details).
Finish it off with an external reservoir for the oil and figure out where you are going to mount it in the truck then get the appropriate length tubes.

You may also look into aftermarket external oil pump, and pan.
Have fun and welcome to the LS world.

Well, with the power adder, and your block of choice you are pretty much limited to @ 414" (4.060x4.00) Even then, I would have teh block sonic tested to make sure it can go .060 over. Blocks have a pretty short deck height (but taller then teh Gen I and II SBC) but the 4.00" crank is pushing it for a power adder, as teh piston is getting downright small on teh compression height. So, any more stroke than that, and gonna have problems, UNLESS you add teh deck spacers, which of course is gonna add big $$$ to your build. SO, you could always go say LS1 block, and do a big bore (with sleeves of course) and then add a 4.00 crank and come up with 427-440 cubes depending on bore of course.
