What is the correct way to install valvesprings?
I have broken 4 valvesprings so far, so something is not right.
What is all this talk about checking installed height and preload. Why didn't the directions have any of this.
When you install valve springs you should figure out your seat and open force. The get the seat force, you need to figure out the installed height. Once you have the installed height requirement, you need to determine the clearance to coil bind and the clearance between the retainer and seal. Installed height is adjusted with shims.
LS1howto is not an end all be all factual web site. It is a great site for some general information, but user beware. There are several major issues with the methods used on that site, just do a search of crank thread problems from following the methods for removal and installation of the pulley. The Yella Terra write-up is wrong as well. It will give you some methods to slap in parts, but it certainly doesn't provide information on setting up a valve train.
Btw, i am using tims tool which is similar to the crane spring install tool.
