Default Bang for the buck upgrades on a basic 402?

All,

I finished up my install of a TSP 402 and related components into my formula. There are still a ton of restrictions on the car (see below) and I'm wondering what the best PROVEN bang for the buck upgrades will be? Looking to squeeze another 30-40whp out of the car if possible. Car as it sits made a hair under 470whp.

The motor is a run of the mill forged TSP 402:
Diamond pistons, flat top with valve reliefs (10.8:1 static)
PRC CNC L92 heads
Comp cam 244/256 .612/.625 114LSA
stock L76 unported intake with LS3 injectors
Stock waterpump
ASP crank pulley
PTM 92mm TB
STOCK screened MAF
SLP lid
TSP 1 7/8 headers
TSP catted Y (3")
Hooker catback
T56 with ram HD clutch
Moser 9", all the suspension goods, etc

My first thoughts are to ditch the 3" catted y and go with a true dual setup? How big of a restriction are the stock MAF and SLP lid? I've been told the cam is not nearly ideal for this setup as well.

Thanks for your thoughts.

On my stock cube Ls3 i gained everywhere by ditching a 85mm Maf and going to a Bigger airlid. And i picked up 10 wheel by going from a off road y-pipe to a true dual system on my car when it was a small cammed ls1. I also have seen a Fasterproms ported Ls3 manifold make 10 wheel on a bolt on ls3 vette. These 4 things should get you around 25-30 wheel i would think.

Thanks for the input. Any chance you have any graphs to share?

Keep them coming!

Ordered a 104mm lid and going to try the SD route. I'm thinking I may try a cutout until I get around to building a true dual setup.

You do not need SD tuning - get a bigger MAF, i would do something about that intake and cat-back...

For the MAF you can save money if you get the LS7 MAF and flange - make your own spacer, some welding required.

Yes, WOT tuning is on point.

Any reason you would suggest against SD tuning? I don't mind spending the money on a 100mm MAF if needed, but I've tuned other cars via SD with no issues?

Change the cam to something that works with the LS3/L92 heads - first.

Tune it SD, I haven't had good experience with 100mm MAFs.

Firstly though, true duals! My 408 picked up 28 rwhp going from an ARH Y and SLP dual dual to a custom true dual setup with an X-pipe. Those extra cubes will love you for letting them exhale easier.

I 100% agree this cam is not ideal by any means for L92 heads in terms of low/mid power, but it should still make decent topend power, no?

I'll give the SD a shot being that I already have the new lid.

As for the exhaust - WOW!! That is some impressive gains from the true duals on your car. I'm running a 3" TSP catted y and hooker catback at the moment, but If I could get even anywhere between 15-20whp from something like that I'd be elated.

I'm not saying my gains are at all typical as I don't think the SLP dual dual is a very free flowing exhaust, but I would just about guarantee that you pick up 10+ rwhp, especially since you are running a catalytic converter.

Update: Picked up a set of true duals, 85mm MAF and 104mm lid. Also in the process of spec'ing a new cam. New dyno numbers in a few weeks.

Update: True duals installed, picked up another 26+whp and 25+wtq peak and a whole lot more in the low/mid range. Car feels pretty violent now. Injectors are also damn close to being maxed out. Pat G cam on the way, should have results in a few weeks.

VERY NICE RESULTS... Subscribed. I too wondered about switching to a bigger MAF and 104mm lid on my last setup. I had a stock maf and slp lid as well!
Congrats on your new found power!

Thanks James! This car has been a fun experiment so far. Can't wait to get the new cam in to see the difference.

Yeah I can totally relate to that. I've been building mine for a lil over 2 years now myself. I've gone from a car with a blown engine, to a stock ls1 running 12.99 at 109 mph to a built 403 LS2 running 10.99 at 125.61 mph. N/A
I did all the work myself, in my garage, and on a decent budget.

I'm currently parting it out, and just picked up a 99 Trans Am. That will be my new project for this winter. I can't wait!

I bet your gonna love the car just that much more, *with a more aggressive cam in there.
I'll be checking back to see the results.

James
