Default How close can you be on p2v?

A friend and I built a ls2 for another friend. The guy bought all the parts he needed and we put the engine together. We clayed it and the gm head gasket made the difference. With out the gasket, the pistons would hit. The owner didn't want to fly cut either. Is he safe? I wouldn't think so, but I'm no pro at this. lol

GM head gasket is .051" compressed. Although there are various opinions on "minimum" PTV clearances, Good luck finding anyone to agree with .051"

.050 ???????? ouch

Then again.... it could live a long time ???

Buddy of mine had a 12.5-13:1 388. When we pulled the heads for some porting 7 of 8 cylinders had witness marks on the piston from the intake valves.

Yes, those are the safe PTV clearance boundries but swap the intake and exhaust numbers.

Try and clay it with the gasket in place, it will change more than the gasket thickness. I would not run below .090 on ex and .050 on intake with auto trans. Add .020 for stickshift.

It's already together. I told the guy that I wasn't happy about the p2v, but he didn't care. Just wanted his car.
