Default Thinking of using this Cam

Hi Guys,

I am thinking of using this cam in my LSX 454,

The cam I have in currently is:

247/254 .700 .700 110 on a 1.8 ratio

The new cam I am thinking about using is:

247/251 .666 .666 113 +3 on a 1.8 ratio, I don't know what the +3 means.

The engine has approx 11.5:1 comp.

What are your thoughts on using this cam?

No thoughts on the cam choice... The "+3" means that the cam has 3° advance ground into it. What 1.8 rockers do you have that live happily with 0.700" lift?

OK so that is what the +3 is all about, as for the rockers, they are the standard LSX rockers on the LSX heads. Do you think there would be an issue with that?

It was all designed and built by my mechanic in Aust, but the final figures weren't what I was hoping or expecting, so am looking at the cam above to see if I can get more out of the LSX 454.

Why do you want to put a smaller cam in?

Haven't got any personal experience with 1.8's, but most here deign them to be a problem with the newer fast-ramp lobes.

I'm with Oakley, sounds like you'd want a bigger stick. At least in the duration figures. You need to PM Patrick G and get a professional recommendation...

I haven't got access to a scanner at the moment, so can't post the power curve.

Some more information on the engine is:

LSX 454.
Fast intake with 60lb injectors
Heads shaved and ported by higgind race heads.
Compression approx 11.7 - 11.8:1
1 7/8" headers 3" dual exhaust.

This is what I am going to use the cam in.

Ok here is a new cam in the mix, it doesn't use the LSL lobes, it is using HUC instead. Designed by the person people said to go too.

It is:

251/263 .670 .670 112+3

This cam sound more like the one I should be using, a little bigger in all respects, but should have better low rev manners than the one that is in it, I am now waiting for his recommended grinder to come back to me with a time frame to get it done.

Thanks for suggesting Patrick G, appreciate the help.

Pat G reccomended HUC lobes? I thought those were more for heavy stock valvetrain's and/or more for marine motors.

Of course there is a reason he is Pat G and I am Fbodyjunkie06 when it comes to cams lol, so I guess he knows something I don't...

BTW did he reccomend you use EPS lobes? Just curious as my next cam I want pat g to spec out on CamMotion, Ed Curtis at Flowtech, or EPS to grind my cam on their proprietary lobes everyone raves about now a days. When my car had the current cam it has put in it TR cams were all the rage. Shows how long my car has been cam'd!

TR cams are still very good proven cams that use their own lobe design. Basically anyone that uses their own lobe design for the LS motor is really shining when it comes to results over a more traditional SBC lobe which I dont know if that is what was used previously on your first cam.

You will be pleased I am sure.
